The package I have illustrates a half dozen different chamfers, notches, etc. Some go up, some go down. Just wanted to make sure you were aware of this. Putting an engine together is pretty easy, but the details need to be paid attention to.
I think it's for the compression pressure that makes it's way down to that ring to add additional force to press the ring against the walls harder than it would without it. It was that chamfer I could see in your previous pics that put me onto making sure you get them installed correctly. You also should check the end gaps too, to insure the gap is wide enough to prevent it from closing completely when the ring heats up. A ring gap closing allows the ends to butt together putting stress on the ring. I am guilty though of not always doing this. But so far I don't think I've ever had anything bad happen if the gaps did close.
