I'm working on a 1949 F1 with an 8RT with 8BA heads I'm having trouble getting the crankshaft timing gear off and the fiber camshaft gear seems to be stuck on also. I was wondering if anybody else has had this problem. Any advice would be appreciated.
You don't need to take either of them off unless you are going to replace them. If you are getting a new cam, get an aluminum cam gear, that's all that's available AFAIK. They never fail, whereas 60-yr-old fiber gears do. Crankshaft gears rarely need replacement.
I'm trying to replace them both gears are pretty wore out the truck has been garaged since the 70's I got it started put a new fuel pump in it had the carb professionally rebuilt new oil pump, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and pertronics ignitor, with a flame thrower coil. Truck runs like a beast but it still wasnt running right so I pulled off the front cover and theres a lot of slop between the timing gears and the distribeter gear was also badly worn.
I'm surprised the cam gear is being a problem; it's probably just being held on by varnish. Give it a whack...
The crank gear is a very tight fit to begin with, and any varnish will just make it harder to get off. Since you're replacing it, and presumably have a new one in hand?, hit it with the hot wrench. You'll need a HD gear puller no matter what.
Were on the same page with the hot wrench that was goona be my next thing to try. I was goona try the cam gear as well. Ive messed aroud with love tapping it with a small malet I wasnt showing it who was the man but next time I will. Thanks for the advice
I was originally trying to pry on it but not getting anywhere I ended up smacking it with a 20 ounce Chevy tool, and then the gear popped right off. Now the crank gear thats a different story I ended up breaking my puller trying to get it loose so now I get to invest in a better on
Two golden rules, I didnt grow in there and time. A good puller they
are stubborn even on engines 60yrs newer. We dont like to bang on
things two much there, could raise hell with thrust bearings. Look at
it this way you need a new fibre cam gear on a 8RT or BA and the
common new junk needs a timiming belt every 60 thou or so. Your
gear did very well and has some story to tell.
The shops current project completion of a late 8BA linked to an AOD
then installed in a 1993 F150 there ya go.
Then the people will say, hey bud your truck stalled cant hear it-
nope its running.
