My 1990 Broncowon't start unless I'm cranking the steering wheel to the left. The day I went to buy it the woman who was selling it couldn't get it started. I had a 79 F-250 that would start only start if you lifted the shifter, so it sounds typical Ford. Anyone else had this trouble?
Do you meant the key won't turn out of the LOCK position until you turn the wheel, OR that after the key is in the START position, you have to turn the wheel for the starter to spin or the ignition to fire?
If the key won't turn until you turn left, there's a metal disk underneath the dash with a number of holes in it. When you turn the key off, a metal rod goes through any one of these holes. This is what keeps you from turning the wheel with the key off. It could be that the rod is sticking in these holes, and turning the wheel releases the force holding the rod in place and allows you to turn the key.
Of course, this only applies if the key isn't turning.
If the key won't turn its an easy fix....let go of the wheel before you turn the truck off. That way the rod won't bind in the hole that it drops into after the power assist to the steering is gone. GM's are notorious for this, I have not had much trouble with it on my Bronco though. If you hold the wheel hard over or the wheel has not settled in when you turn it off this will almost always happen. If it still has the problem, chances are you have a truck that someone did that to all the time and there is a bur or groove worn in the rod that makes it ALWAYS bind up.

I need to turn the wheel then turn the key (the key works fine). I went ahead and ran a button starter and ran it in a hidden spot I still need the key to get the rig started but now I've got a great kill switch. Thanks for the responce. (SP)
