I drained my battery in a parking garage today and ended up push-starting it. I had to make some pretty hard turns while the car wasn't running and when I finally got it going my steering was all messed up. Right-hand turns are particularly problematic. My car/steering wheel shutters and feels like its kicking back at me. Any ideas?
sometimes when you turn the steering wheel when the engine is off you can get air in the lines. start the engine and trun the wheel hard left-right all the way to bleed the air out. has happend to me when working on the front brakes.
I wouldn't hurt to replace the fluid in the ps unit. I know most people don't, but I change mine about every other oil change. I have one of those brake bleeder vacuums which works pretty well. I had another brand vehicle which started to shudder on parking turns and changing the fluid solved the problem.
Be sure to check the spec fluid, if you decide to change it. I always use ATF.
The air will work it's way out. The hard stop left/right process at an idle has worked well for me to bleed the air out. Make sure to crank the wheel all the way and hold it there for a few seconds each way. The PS pump will groan a bit but won't hurt it. After trying the left/right bleed you can look in the PS reservoir with engine off to see if there are bubbles/foam indicating more air has come out. And of course make sure your PS is full of fluid.
Thanks for all of the help. The problem seems to be fixed. Next time I change my oil I'll try changing out the power steering fluid as well. Certainly couldn't hurt.
Again, thanks for all the fast replies. Saved me yet another expensive trip to the garage or even worse....the dealership.
