7.3 IP Problems?

Hi guys, swapped blocks out of my 94 f350. Origional had 600,000 on it, and found a 91 7.3 with 250,000 on it. Swapped blocks out, put all my 4 month old fuel parts on which were working perfect on old motor. Primed everything, rolled it over untill we had fuel everywhere, and fired it up, for 1 second. Then it died, and as it died it turned IP to the right about 5deg. I had pump tight when it was put on. Now I cannot get fuel to the injectors. Fuel soleonoid on IP is clicking and functioning (I hear it), and have great fuel to the IP. Any ideas? Other than pull pump and take to local fuel injection shop?

Sounds like the pump locked up, question is why. Check the gear cover that nothing got stuck in there. I would pull the pump off and see if you can turn it by hand. At least pull the gear cover and look in there.

I pulled the gear cover off, and everything is bolted and turning properly still. Will have to pull IP off and take to injection guy. I was just holding out hope for a quick fix.

Even though its clicking, could there be trash in the fuel shutoff solenoid?

I'm not certain. I've had the truck for over 10 years now, I'm a reasonably good wrench puller, but I have no idea about the internal workings of this IP.

Just thinking its simple, as it was working fine. How long was it off?

Was off about 2 months. It sat on a workbench for that entire time. I'm just scared that something bad happened internally that caused the pump to spin when she fired up.

Was it wrapped in a bag, rag or covered in any way while it was stored on your workbench?

Maybe shop dust, saw dust, or crap got inside....

I have seen all kinds of crap in IPs working on tractors. Had one that had a paint chip in it. And it was Ford blue!

Just an update for those who may be interested, took the IP to a local fuel injection shop today. Bad news for me, main shaft inside pump has snapped. The best we can guess is that I had a piece of dirt get into an injector and caused a hydraulic lock in the IP. Were going to pull all the injectors out of block and get them tested and find the issue hopefully. Will give an update when we find the problem.

Sorry man. Good opportunity to get a bigger pump. Just trying to think positive.

Hey just a final update to this thread. I sent my IP out to injection shop, got it rebuilt (1000$ later) and it turned out all my injectors were fine. Which left me kind of scared to put new one back in and confused as to what happened to last IP. Inquired again to the guy who rebuilt my pump, and he asked me if I recently had my water pump off, which I had. Turns out stanadyne had a buliten out years ago on this very problem. International has 2 different sizes of short bolts that hold water pump on, 1 1/2 and 1 1/4. If you accidentally put a 1 1/2 in the 2 holes directly infront of your timing gear, they actually touch the gear. This causes the main shaft inside the IP to sideload and snap, which it did on mine. I've had the water pump on and off this engine lots over the years and never noticed the different sizes, guess I was lucky. Anyways I write this long drawn out story in the hopes it helps one of you not destroy a perfectly good IP.

That's bad luck sorry it happened to you. If you read the threads on water pump changes there is a lot of info and warnings about exactly what happened.
