The mechanism that engages the starter gear into the flywheel. I would take it back and get another one if it's still under warranty.
I did... that's the one I mentioned that I installed 5 days ago and have been problem free since. Cool vid on You tube showing a starter torn apart... its a bit different than the ones I rebuilt for our old 50's and 60's farm trucks... but I guess I know the formal name for the parts I replaced.

Lol I meant understanding that the Bendix is actually responsible for the release as well. I always thought it was only responsible for throw out. I was just very skepticle that the starter was the problem originally, I didn't want to replace the ignition switch. I guess I got lucky since the new starter has solved the problem(knock on wood)... and I wanted to know why...it was the bendix I'm taking it. I never knew the formal name and did not think it caused the ring gear to hang out, but only stick in.
