I have a 79 f150 4x4, automatic, with the 400m in her, im lookin for some input on some performance parts I should look at, Im gonna be takin the engine out soon and rebuildin her, Im lookin to get a lot more get up and go out of her, but still be able to drive around town, right now the only thing it really has i a electric fuel pump on the frame rail to help with fuel delivery, and hooker longtube hedders. any input would be awesome! im talkin the whole thing too, cam, pistons, carb, intake, ignition, pretty much everything.
From what I've read a 600-650 cfm carb is good with all the mods listed. On mine I have an MSD coil and factory cap with 8.8 wires, worked good when my friend drove the truck. Can't really recommend a specific intake but really any aftermarket cam beats factory and straight up timing helps. If you want to change the pistons(for higher compression) you could jut get better heads for better flow also if your not too worried about money. If you do the heads you CAN use heads from a 351C and if I'm right Windsor heads but with modification and things.
yea I was probably just gonna stick to 87.. as far as I know in my state (Michigan) its illegal to run anything higher than premium down the road , and shes gonna be on/off road truck, I wanna be able to keep up a lil better with the newer trucks is all. give the ole girl a little more oomph
Im running Tim Meyer flat top pistons 9.3 cr a comp cam 268 straight up timing set headman headers frame exit. Edelbrock performer intake with a 600 cfm summit carb. And it is a tire fryer! It will run circles around my 99 super duty. Scrow down and check out the 335 series fourm them guys will put you in the right direction!
I need to quit buying these trucks, just called a guy about an 85 351w auto, now I got that, plus a 78 with the 360 im pickin up next week, I think I have an addiction..
what brand do you guys think for the intake and carb and what not, I was always a holley guy myself, but... whatever does the job better.. ive never really done to much research, the proof was always in the pudding when I was younger, who ever made it to that road sign first...
Either weiand or edelbrock intake I believe. Edelbrocks run nice, but Holley will suport more out of the box performance. I had 3 different edelbrocks on my 460 and they would support about 5800 rpm and that was it. High flow needle and seat helped about 100 rpm. I changed nothing but went to a holley carb, that was it. then held to valve float, at 6000 rpm. That proved to me who makes more power, but edelbrocks are a nice running carb too.
I've heard praises of the weiand stealth intake I think it's called, but my old FE and this 351/400 whatever the hell it is has an edelbrock street master with either a Holley 600 or 650 cfm carb. ALWAYS ran strong when my friend drove it and would support rpms but idk how much yet(no tach yet).
