There is no regulation on pump handle color, separation of gas & diesel pumps nor location on the pump gas/ diesel on the pump when shared. We have a decent mix of Green & Yellow handles around here. There have been many instances where I start pumping and about 5 gallons in I have to double take to make sure I'm pumping diesel.

Operational Experience:

Don't buy fuel when hugely sleep deprived
Buy fuel from the same places (even on the road)
Don't rely on color of anything on the dispenser
Your comment that the fuels have 2 densities would imply that there is no need to worry because the fuel seperates and won't get picked up by the fuel system...You need to clarify what you are trying to say.

For my own piece of mind I mixed equal diesel and unleaded...The fuels mixed immediately and as of 15 minutes there is no sign of separation. Based on the OP comments he did say the truck was driven for a 10 or 17 miles or something like that....
I can honestly say your truck was contaminated..I would monitor things for a while..I wonder why no sensors that are alcohol sensitive aren't showing signs yet..

I guess my point was to clarify that diesel and gas mix really well..This will make me pay more attention during fueling when not in my local area. Which IN Ca. by the way are green handles for diesel.

Good Luck..and don't be so hard on the boy..It was an honest mistake that he will remember for the rest of his life.

this article/thread just took my appetite out the back door! My girl was obsessed with taking my truck for a drive and I just cringed at the thought of her driving it ! same with another friend ,just don't want some freak set of circumstances or blind negligence to cost me thousands, only to hear a half hearted "Sorry I had the radio up real loud and did 'nt hear anything else". I just had an emmissions warranty repair for a new HPFP installed on my truck and it was upways of 6k$ before taking a trip with the camper.Heard a story of a guy putting the DEF fluid in the diesel side of the 6.7 litre and that stuff just crystalizes immediately ,his solution was to drive to the dealership RIGHT AWAY!...........To late new motor! as a 21 year old kid in jersey i worked a bunch of OT got a new bike and rode up to new york for a weekend ,stopped for gas and grabbed the green handle and filled her up with diesel ! came back after paying saw what I did and cursed up a storm, then emptied the tank put a 1/2 gal of gas in removed it from bike swished it around ,dumped it , filled it up and fired it up she was fine ,lucky I looked .I would be glad this did not happen out in the desert far from help etc. [still SUCKS] but I hide this post every time she comes in the kitchen as I write this ! have to be dilligent and IN CONTROL...... No you can't drive my vehicle if I had to explain you would'nt understand !

I'd like to acknowledge the high quality of individuals who can be found on FTE forums. I note that 735 people read this thread and I am proud to note that not one said that it was a good time to take the truck down and trade it in. That's impressive.

We'll here's my point of view on the whole mess, some have said that nobody but themselves drive there truck, Period!!! So this won't happen, well I too was in this group until I figured out it's just not practical, someone, sometime, is going to have to use and fuel the truck, SO teach them!! You don't go get gas in dad's truck you put fuel in it, Diesel, my wife now corrects me every time I say I'm going to get gas. It takes a while but it can be done, and if in the end it happens, don't have a heart attack, just do the best you can and remember it's only an (expensive to repair) truck but it's not your wife, son, or daughter.
Took me a long time but I sleep better at night not worrying about what's going to screw up tomorrow, take good care of it and it will take care of you, and missteps will happen along the way, deal with it when they happen.
BTW, I drive my truck like it's a sacred cow, my wife, whose normal driver is a 99 E250 high top with a 5.4 (DOG) drives it like it's stolen, I kinda think the truck likes that.

To the OP,

Did you keep you're fuel filter?
You should cut it apart, and see whats trapped in it.

I kept both. I'm letting them dry out. I will open them up Friday. Will post pics. Will be a good indicator since they only had about 500 miles on them.

I took fuel filter out 4 weeks in a row. No shims, no crud. Nothing. Looks like I dodged this bullet. I put a whole two gallons of Kleene that month as well.

1. How much reg gas was put in?
2. How much diesel was in the tank.
3. You drained the tank and you refilled with diesel? Right?

Remember:
For every gallon of gas that might be in the tank you need to reduce the octane aka increase cetane.

To do this for every gallon of reg gas put a bottle of Ford cetane.

If the % percent of reg gas is more than 1/4 of total gas in the tank.

1. Drain tank
2. Drain fuel from lines
3. Replace fuel filters
4. Fill with Diesel
5. 6 Bottles of cetane

Driving it on the highway or whatever makes no difference. Just take it easy for a tank or two and no towing.

I've run into the old oops reg gas in 6.4...
Follow above and you will be fine.

All this hype drama about reg gas in diesel of just too funny.
Bad things happen if you do nothing.

When I first got my new truck I added 8 gallons reg gas to my 32 gallon tank by accident and put in 8 bottles of cetane.

Motor never sounded weird and three years later and 28,000 miles I have no problems.
