It's all a guess without any diagnostics.

I would have to assume that the Freon level was checked (I know,I know) being it was in for an a.c. complaint, typically that's step one in diagnosis. So I would guess temp or pressure sensor next.

My first guess would be a sensor or something. Why is it so hard to diagnose this?

Mine would not work at idle or in town, ended up being a bad fan clutch. When temp went up fan would not work so it would shut off A/C.

A sensor could be off just a little bit, not so far out of range that the ecu calls bs, but requires the right combination of temperatures to cause problems. As 7.3 mentioned a fan issue can throw things for a loop at slow speeds.

UPDATE: After two evaporator coils its finally fixed! Yes.....I said two! They had a defective evaporator from Ford the first time and got it right the second go round. Needless to say they removed and re-installed the dash twice. The tech hates me!

Hope they got it fixed right this time! Did they give you an explanation as to how a defective evaporator could cause this? Was it leaking?

Original unit had a pressure leak as evidenced by dye seepage. The first new unit came apart at the tube connection to the coil. Bad luck?

Minor compared to Andy's.
Last August my HVAC blower failed completely, 600 miles from home camping, 26k miles.
Last weeks, again 600 miles from home and camping, my blower sounds like it is ready to explode.
Have an appointment tomorrow in Elkhart Indiana.
