Replacing ICP Sensor

I have a 2005 F250 6.0 and I am planning to replace my ICP sensor(in pass. valve cover). My truck had an intermitant surging and cutting out. The dealer replaced the EGR valve, but the problem returned. After an extremly pour running condition I wiggled the ICP sensor plug just before I took it back to the dealer. They said it showed a code for ICP sensor, but was currently working. They know I will not pay them to diagnose the same problem more than once so they will not do anything until the problem returns. The problem has not returned, but I occationally get the wrench shaped warning light with the engine running great. (light never came on when running bad) If for nothing else but my peace of mind, I am replaceing the ICP to see if it is corrected. Is there any special proceedure I need to watch out for? Is it simply unplugging, unscrewing old sensor and installing new one and plugging in? Does anything need to be applied to threads?

Unclip harness. Unscrew old one. Apply some oil to o-ring on new one and screw in. Don't have to go crazy tight, just firm. Apply a little dielectric grease and clip harness back in.

Figure out what is setting the wrench light before shotgunning parts at the truck. Get a scan tool.

It sounds more like the harness anyways. I always replace the pigtail when doing the sensor.

Thanks for the advice. Replacing the sensor was easy, I did not replace the pigtail. The light did come back on just after replacing the sensor, but has not come back on since. I got a hold of a scan tool but it does not show any codes. I have been plugging it in when I drive very far in case the light comes on to see if it shows a code. I do not know if this scanner shows historic codes or just ones currently coming up. That is the whole problem, it is not a consistent issue. The dealer showed a code for the ICP Sensor after the truck was surging and cutting out, but it was not doing anything when the truck was in. The truck has been running great since being in the dealer, only the light came on a couple of times. I did not reply as I thought I might have something else to report. I suspect that now I have stated that I have not been having problems, something will happen tomorrow.

Don't ignore that wrench light!
If it's an overboost condition, it could be
bye bye head gaskets! Ask me how I know.
I believe you need a ford scan tool or equal, to read
a wrench light, but I'm not sure.

The wrench light has not been on for almost 3 weeks. Do I need to worry if it does not come back on? When you are talking about overboost are you talking high turbo boost? My boost gauge has been reading as is always has. Or are you talking about a condition like an EGR cooler failure that sends antifreeze into the combustion chambers?

He just ment the CEL could be from a Turbo Overboost

Nothing to do with EGR Cooler Failure

However some of the Newer Trucks or Really any with newer Stratigy will Also Trigger CEL for a Plugged Oil Cooler

Very GOOD Advice here^^^^

Lots of stuff will trigger CEL

Does sound like ICP though since you wiggled and got better and then Dealer pulled ICP DTC

Does sound like the ICP connector was Loose and wiggling was just the Ticket to get a good connection

If you do have a NO-START one day over this you can unplug ICP sensor and Start it with ICP unplugged

I hope it was just this sensor. If the light comes back on, or I have any other problems I suppose I need to find someone that can diagnose the problem correctly. I definitely do not trust the local dealer to accurately diagnose any problem, even though they should have the most resources to do so.

With a Simple Gauge that Plugs into the OBDII port you can Diagnose Lots of stuff

All you have to do is Post the numbers on FTE

It dont always work out that Easy but it does Alot of the Time especialy if its just a Bad sensor

A ScanGaugeII or dashBoss would pay for itself

I run a ScanGaugeII its paid for itself MANY MANY times over in Fact I found a BAD TFT Sensor on my truck yesterday
