I have a 2000 expedition with the 5.4. I have a problem with running rough giving lean codes. It idles fine but hesitates a second when throttled. Driving is rough sometimes mostly when it goes under a load. When it pulls if I hold the throttle pedal where it is it sputters and bucks but if I kick it down it smooths out. Changed fuel filter, cleaned throttle body and maf sensor, rebuilt injectors and replaced 3 vac hoses that looked iffy .
Without just replacing sensors any ideas what to test
Follow the PCV hose around to the back center of the intake manifold. There you will find a rubber elbow that is often damaged and causes a lean condition.
Some flow is okay, but there should be some resistance. It shouldn't flow easy like an open tube would.
It's easy enough to clean the pcv valve, soaking in gas for a few to ensure its operating properly.
To alloro's point, changing out the pcv elbow can't hurt as its the most common source for pulling lean bank codes.
For your cop question, yes the boots start to crack and allow spark energy to escape, finding the plug hole sides to ground and create inconsistent firing.
See my recent post on what happens to these boots. Most of the time you can just change these boots to solve the issue. Like most electronics, it either works or it doesn't and these cop's are pretty durable.
