I thought there was a tread in the tech folder but I could not find it. I was just going to add to it. Some of these trucks are a little different so........
2005 F250 ccsb 6.0L 160k miles.
The truck had a lift on it which has been taken off.
I put some of the new fluid in a bottle and set it next to the stuff that came out to see the difference.
I took the return hose off coming from the steering gearbox. It was routed via a cooler in the front of the truck. It was kind of tight down in there. I could have taken the batt and air filter out to get more room. It was a bit of a PITA getting the clear hose off and on. One thing that surprised me was how fast the fluid came out when the engine was started. It took about 3 seconds to suck the fluid down, and I needed to fill back up. I did not even get a chance to turn the wheel back and forth. The process took about 30 minutes with wife help.
I just purchased a Red Head and look to install next weekend.
Now you need to install a Magnefine Filter in the return line. Part #R038M 3/8". Can be purchased at www.emergingent.com/magnefine Really keeps the system clean.
Are these Magnefine filter cleanable/reusable? If not, how long ya think between changes?
They are designed for use on the tranny return lines so on the P.S. system they should be good for many years, in my op. On a tranny they recommend yearly changes. Install it on the top return line at the hydroboost. Simple, quick and if you add 4" of line at the hydroboost unit you don't have to cut the stock line.
The hydroboost return comes in on the other side of the reservoir(not in pic). It looks like the high pressure comes from the pump, through the hydroboost (hydroboost has low pressure bleed off), then to the steering box. I wanted to catch as much as possible. I replaced about 3 qts.
Well, the flush and fill is in my future. I can't tell what the fluid looks like but when I check the level I can smell it's a little toasty. Truck is at 151k and prob never been touched. Guess I'll order a filter for it also, it does look like cheap insurance.

I used Mercon V synthetic to flush mine. I went thru 4 qts. if your interested. The filter is directional so follow the arrows on it.
Here's a pic showing the magnafine filter,,, and if you pull the relay I'm pointing at,, the wife can crank the truck while turning the wheel without the truck starting so the glow will be much easier to keep up with. Much easier if you jack both front wheels up then turning the wheel is a breeze.
You might consider pulling the reservoir, plugging the outlets, putting some degreaser and water in it,, and shaking the heck outta it. Do this a couple times. The ps reservoir has a built in screen in it. It can be cleaned,, this pic shows mine when it had 582k mi on it. It was freakin horribly nasty. Not any more
