I thought I'd shoot a video of how my filter looked when I pulled it. It is by far the worst one I've ever pulled outta my truck. It has been a while since I ran the truck down to the low fuel light. I figured I'd run it down to clean the tank before changing the filters. There was,,, is,,, some nasty crap in the tank. I haven't ran it low all winter. Since its getting warm I can run it low some more (just before filter changes) and hopefully get the tank clean. I know, I know,, that a gamble with my injectors,,, but it's worked for me so far. Btw,,, I'm about to buy 100 of those fuel filter kits. I am gonna keep that filter so I can check it out in the daytime and make sure it isn't algae. That would suk
I hear all that guys,,, I've pulled them before with them still white. When I stop I will check it out better. Maybe a focused pic. Last night it looked like dirt. I'm guessing if its algae, then it will grow or something. I've got it in a ziplock bag.
But that's the worst I've ever seen MY filter. I've changed some that were so nasty,, it would've been an improvement to put this one in tho. Lol.
I actually don't drain the separator into a clear container. After the oil gets done draining, I just drain it into the last oil jug. It gets drained weekly so I don't really check for water content. Prob should,,, but I don't. I've been relaxed on running to the low fuel light before changes. It shows. I've gotta get back into my routine.
Is this the first fuel filter you have changed since you got rear-ended?
Makes me wonder if that kick in the pants didn't dislodge a whole bunch of crap that used to be semi-stuck to the sides of the tank.
With the force of the impact and the fuel violently sloshing around for a few seconds might have pulled some crap off the side walls and bottom that then settled with gravity to the bottom of the tank?
Except now it isn't held on to a surface anymore and that's how you picked it up running the tank so low?
Edit: Also maybe there was stuff in different areas of the tank (I'm not sure of the internal structure of a fuel tank but I imagine there's baffles and such) and now that stuff is also moved closer to the pick up?
Anthony, do you fuel at regular fuel stations or have a commercial fuel card for the flying J or Chevron? With all that fuel you use, I would imagine the margin would help you a bit. This way you get a slight benefit on the price per gallon and you get higher volume fuel which is likely to be cleaner and fresher. I don't run near the miles you do but I am almost exclusively using commercial card lock fuel and only use station fuel if I have too.
I am thinking that you pulled some gunk just because you ran her low. I don't do it very often but it's a good idea to do it right before a fuel filter change for sure.
Ps your truck looks great, well taken care of. I wish mine looked that good, she is showing signs of our severe winter weather.
