Failed EVAP smog test

Hello;

I am new to the forum; thanks for having me. I've just purchase a 1991 ranger 4.0 5 spd 4 wd. The tech started with the EVAP test, which failed miserably. He didn't charge me for the test, but, did not completee the test either. He said there was a 99% chance it was a cracked fuel filler hose. I contacted the gentleman I bought the truck from, he said he replaced that three years ago. I pulled off the bed today and sure enough the hose was good and the clamps were tight. However, where I expected to find one vapor line from the vapor valve, I found two. One ran to the charcoal cannister and the other was missing, Or maybe the plug was missing. Every image I can find of these show only one hose from the valve. Can someone help me?

However IDK if your is Like this or I am confussed exactly where you mean

But How I see it from the Purge Valve/silinoid one Line goes to the Charcoal canister and the Other Line Goes to the Throttle Body/Intake

Do you know the exact DTC thrown??
Should it have one??? Mines Newer than 1996 so OBDII and its got a few diffrent ones for that EVAP System

IDK Good Luck and am Curious to what you find out

I think I've finally got a good image link. Someone told me they think it's the fuel filler tube vent hose. I don't have that type of filler tube.

If your filler tube has an internal vent, then just cap the line.

I think I'm going to just plug the hose. I believe this is what caused my EVAP test to fail. However, I wonder if capping it will cause me to fail another part of the test later? I don't know of any other system in the truck that'll include fuel tank in the vacuum/vent system.

Thank you for your help.

Oh I see where its at

I was Lost I thought you were in the engine bay area

My only thought is EVAP will let air In but Not out so could that be an air Inlet??

I suppose you could cap it and drive for a Few then remove the Gas Cap and see if there is really High Vac Press

If the Short Hose is a Vent Line then that might mean the Valve there at the tank is Bad IDK just a Thought

I put a little air pressure into the tank via the evap hose @ the charcoal cannister. The valve made a "farting" noise, as the air escaped from that "extra" hose. The valve does not operate the other way, it is single action, so, when there is pressure in the tank or a vacuum applied at the charcoal cannister the valve opens. The vacuum is simultaneous at both hoses. It is my understanding the fuel cap provide air to the tank to prevent deformation of the tank as the vapors inside cool and condense. The tech did not check the fuel cap, he checked the evap by connecting his equipment to the filler tube.
