First and foremost, I am new to the forum. Don't have a truck yet, but have always wanted one. Here is one I have had my eyes on for a little while now. My question to all you fine folks... To buy or not to buy.. and Is this a normal bed? Thoughts on the truck? It is apparently a 63 with an inline 6. He said I could have it for $2500. Yay or Nay?
I know th front fender has damage, bed has a rubber mat, and under the mat looks like the bed floor may have rusted through a little near the tailgate. Didn't see any rust on the cab corners, runs good, drives good.
It is the correct bed from the factory but it is not the matching bed, as some of them received the 57-60 bed after the unibody ceased production. If it were me I would wait for a 65 or 66 twin I beam easier to put power steering and upgrade certain items IMHO.
$2500 is a bit pricey but you need to ask yourself is that the truck you want or should you wait for the right one to come along, because one will. I have never liked the look of the early bed but some people like it.
They are bad for rust in the front cab mounts, also lift up the carpet in the cab and look where the kick panel vents are at the floor, and inside back cab corners underneath. Also under the battery tray.
Wow, they went crazy with the Pep Boy's accessories......
As said, look at the cab mounts, floor boards and steps. Also how long was it driven without an air cleaner?
Price is more than I would pay....but then I'm cheap......
Thank you all for the answers.. I was thinking it was a bit high.. I would kinda like a V8 instead of the inline 6. Don't really care for the bed either..
What would a good price for a very nice 65 dman2008 or anyone for that matter? There is a faily nice one for sale locally for $4500 with a fresh tran and engine rebuild on a 302. Below is a pic of it... Don't care for the wheels much, but thats not that big of a deal, do like the color etc..
That truck is referred to by some as a wrong bed.... it was a standard equipment bed until the end of 1963 when the body matched Styleside replaced it.. My truck is a 64 with the "Correct bed, and a 352.... I got mine four years ago for $1800, in much cleaner shape then that one... so keep on searching your dream is out there...
There is a lot of money tied up in the truck already, nice rear bumber, nice steps. The goal is to be the 3rd or 4th person in the process of repair and restore.
dman and rustywheels point out you should know what you want and where you are going... daily driver, street rod, hot rod, restoration project? Make sure she is the "one".
The biggest mistake a person falling in "rust" makes is not doing an inventory. Get a parts catalog, hardcopy or go online and use it to evaluate and price the repairs for the truck. These catalogs show you what to look for.
Do a compression check. Head jobs are $200 - $450. Radiator repairs are $200 to $350.
High dollar body items which are not looked at close enough are: Need A/C? $1300, Grill $600, Radiator support $300, stone shield $200, floor pan set $90, steps and rocker panels $190, anti rattle kit $200, it goes on and on...... easily can pass $2000 in body parts plus several hundred hours in labor. Consider shipping.... It costs more to ship some items than the item sells for.
Personally the twin I beam platform is just better, and if the paint is decent that is worth at least $2500, if the engine and trans is in good shape that means no cash out so additional savings.
So it may seem like $4500 is a lot more but is it really at this point? Maybe you can offer that guy $4000 and get that 65 buy some new wheels $1000 maybe upgrade some brakes if you have to.
I say as long as that 65(it has a 66 grill) is as he says then it is worth approx that price, but always offer less, 10% is fair IMHO. Trust me you can add power steering power brakes and all that way easier & cheaper on the 65 and newer platforms.
Go have a good look and drive it and maybe get it for $3500 look for the same areas for rust and crawl around underneath see what you can find and let us know what you find. Enjoy your search as there are lost of deals out there you just need to find it.
The paint on the 65 looks to be really good, if the interior is as good looking as the body than it is easily worth $3500. If there are any upgrades like disk brakes and power steering than it is worth the $4500. I would definitely take a really good look at it and figure out what it needs if anything and make an offer.
An additional recommendation is to stop looking at trucks for a week or so and spend that time on this forum researching rust issues, restorations, troubleshooting, etc. (unless you have already been doing this) I guarantee the research will make you a more informed buyer.
That list of costs that Old Broke has started for you is also good to have handy when you start your search. With it, you can determine a ballpark final cost (cost of purchase plus repairs) that can help you determine which truck to rule out purchasing. I say ballpark because you'll find that we're never done spending $$ on these.

I agree with Mark, I would take a close look at the 65 and check for serious rust issues. The paint looks in decent condition, and if the seller has receipts for the engine and trans work even better. Without pic's of the interior, and engine compartment it's pretty much a 'take a close look then take it for a spin'. I would try and get a sense whether the seller would be willing to come down in price, perhaps 3.5 or 4K; if not, I would probly still consider it? Personally, I prefer the 302 to a couple of the other Ford V 8's.

That is a slick ride for $4,500. Paint looks good and as long as there is no bad rust it is a lot nicer looking than the other. My first engine choice is 292 then the 302, certainly easier on the pocket book 352/390. My first girl friend's dad drove a 66 with 302, 3 on the tree, and 2.75 gears and he got in the low 20's for gas mileage driving 65 on a relatively flat stretch of road. I drove 60 miles one way every day.
Price and cost are two different things. Buy the truck you love in the best shape possible. You can burn through $2,000 in parts and paint real quick. I started with a $4,500 truck and quit counting after burning through another $10,000. I love my truck and will never part with it and that is what makes it a value.
I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who responded. I think I am going to take my time and find "the one." Don't be surprised if I throw another pic or two up here if I find one that might be the one!
I would like to find either a daily driver that I can start doing my own thing to and just enjoy as a little weekend project truck. I just don't want to have to do anything major body wise, and minmal mechanical.
Thanks again, and hopefully I will be joining the family here at FTE when I make a purchase!
