MPG

Ok i know this is a dumb question, but i am 16 so i need a truck a little better on gas mileage than a full size. I recently test drove a 5 speed 1991 f150 with my dad. It has a straight six in it, rather than a v8. We are thinking about getting it. What do you think it gets mpg wise. Thanks

Couple questions first. Is it running tip top? What's the rear gearing? 2wd or 4wd? Bed/cab config? Tire size?

If it's a 2 wheel drive and 3.08 gearing (Code 18 or H8 on the Door Jamb Sticker)

14-16 in town, 16-17 mixed and about 18-20 highway.

4x4, or lower gear ratio's (3.55 is code 19 or H9) you'll see 1-3 lower mpg.

This is true.

I can go from 15-16 in town, to 12-13 easily, if I really romp on the throttle (I have a theory on mpg/I6 mpg that has actually been consistent, but that's a different thing)

with tires properly inflated, good driving technique, and a standcab/long/shortbed truck....You should see the #'s I mentioned.

An I6 truck with 3.08 gears is pretty much useless as a truck so you may as well have a small car, it'll get 3 to 4 times better milage and be a whole lot more fun to drive.

Those gears make it feel like a dog when driving. A small car will have a lot more get up to it, and get way better gas mileage.

Well depending upon the transmission it could have a legal towing capacity as low as 2000lbs(my subaru has a higher limit), it'll be the slowest thing on the road not peddle powered, and driving around town it'll get low to mid teens fuel milage...my subaru gets 25min.
If you still want a truck why not look at a Ranger, as long as you don't buy a 4.0 4x4 with an automatic it'll get very good milage compared to a fullsize, our ext cab 3.0 5-speed manages mid 20s towing a landscape trailer around most of the time.

i see what you mean. when you said it was the slowest thing on the road you forgot about the dodge rams and dakotas with the 3.9
