Engine was making a knocking noise heard outside of vehicle down low under the vehicle. Noise increased with throttle.
Engine light came on. Code P0430 came up.
Can a catalytic converter make the knocking noise I heard?
Knocking noise is now gone since the engine light came on. Did the computer retard timing to control knock and that is why I don't hear it now?
Is replacing the driver side catalytic converter the answer to the problem?
Can this replacement be done in my driveway?
Thank you.
Did you look under the truck to see if the O2 sensors after the cats were intact? The knocking noise could be a broken O2 sensor laying against the exhaust.
If they're both intact then it is probably a bad cat. The honeycomb inside can break loose and rattle around. Like lv2race it might be under warranty. Most manufacturers have to cover cats for something like 100K miles.
Thank you both for taking the time to reply.
My understanding from reading the warranty manual, is that cats are warranteed for 8 years or 80K miles. As stated, my Navigator has 89K. So, I assume I am out of luck for Ford picking up the tab.
No O2 sensors are loose. I thought usually when the cat beds go out, they rattle like marbles in a coffee can, not make knocking noises.

Next time I'll pay closer attention to the title Hopefully your truck is new enough that they may cover it, if that is the problem. It may worth a call to the dealer.
