I was driving down the road and started to brake for a stop light, at about 20mph my truck (2004 F150 super crew Lariat 4x4 with the 5.4L V8) started to shake violently, and grinded to a stop. I stop put my flashers on and then walked around the truck thinking I hit something or something came off. Nothing appeared out of the ordinary. So i got back in and kept going and it was fine for about 20-30 feet. Then I heard a huge snap and the truck abruptly stopped and almost took me out of my lane due to the shaking. I pulled over, turned it off and got out. There was no oil or liquid dripping from the truck so I said What the hell is going on!. I got back in one more time and put it in Drive and the truck acted as if the parking brake was on and would not move. If Rev'd the engine over 2000RPMS the whole truck would shake violently and move very slowly. So i stopped and called a tow truck and had it brought home. I had to drive the truck down my driveway and the front right wheel locked up and i had floor it and spin the rear wheels to get it down my driveway. The front right wheel freezes in place after about 5-8 feet of moving in any direction. Im thinking its an axle or bearing? or Caliper failure?
Any ideas on whats going on??
I know exactly what it is,..happened to me 2 weeks ago. I was getting off the freeway and touched my brakes, wham,...I thought my right front wheel was locked up! I could move forward, but when I touched my brakes, WHAM !!! I pulled over, looked it all over, then saw a little worn groove in the inside of the wheel where something was rubbing. I crawled under and could see the lower bot holding the caliper was missing. In MY case the larger bracket that the caliper bolts to. I got a ride to Ford, got 2 new bolts just to be safe, changed them out, and good to go. Sounds like your caliper is really jammed into your inner wheel. Please let us know what you find.
I recently did a complete brake job plus ball joints and figure I got distracted and didn't torque the bolts tight enough.
