The 2000 X I have has Warn locking hubs on them. Just to be clear, I'd need to switch them to 'lock' then choose either 4-Hi or 4-Low on the dash in order to engage the transfer case, correct?
Well that's not all technically true. If you use the switch on the dash only, it will enguage the transfer case, therefore turning the front driveshaft, diff, and axle shafts. Without the hubs locked though, the front tire get no power. So it's not really in 4 wheel drive.
But yes, in order to use 4 wheel drive, hubs and **** on dash have to both be turned.
This is interesting..... I have noticed when you buy an Excursion alot of people tell you to replace the factory hubs. I dont know why.... according to the owners manual the factory hubs have an "Automatic" setting and "locked". If you leave the hub in "Auto" and engage the switch then your truck is in 4WD. I guess with aftermarket hubs you have to manually turn them by hand to get 4 WD. I was thinking I had to lock my factory hubs as well. Is there a problem with the factory hubs that they should be replaced? Thanks. Greg.
The factory hubs that come with the ESOF (**** on the dash) in the Excursions, and Superdutys, use engine vaccum(vaccum pump on a Diesel) to lock the hubs when the **** is turned to 4x4. Sometimes, the vac system doesn't work than you have to get out and lock them in anyways. Now the kicker is if you don't use them very much, the **** on the hubs get stuck and your screwed with no 4x4.

Oh I see.... thats why they have the vacuum lines going to the front wheels.... so if the lines leak I can still turn the hub to lock them and I have 4 WD right? I need to turn mine back and forth to make sure they are loose enough and not frozen. Thanks for the info
Hey guys on that note I have an 02 model and when I got it they where turned clockwise and stuck is that in th lock or auto as mine only has one dot on it ant no other markings and the handle doesn't line up with the dot.
