volare component part # ?
Need some help here relative to a component in the "volare" steering column assy -
The part known as the "double coupling and shaft assy"....It's the bottom portion of the steering column. starting immediately above the (power) steering box with a coupler that attaches to the shaft coming out of the steering box up to and including the bottom half of the "rag joint" or flexible coupling.
For a 84 Chrysler 5th Ave - what is the part number for this part and what other applications can I find it in according to Hollanders?
(I had to cut mine to get the front suspension out and in doing so, I cut it so close to the upper end (the flex joint), there is no way it can be welded back together. I gotta find another one.)
Thanks,
Whilst removing crap from the donor car in preparation for pulling the "volare" front suspension - I suffered a momentary flash of stupidity and cut the the aforementioned part - and cut it SO DARNED CLOSE to the end closest to the "rag joint' that it can't be rewelded back together, nor can I use the rag joint half that was cut from the part we're talking about.
It'll be a while (a really, really long while) before I'm ready to mount the steering but I'll need the piece then anyway, so I'd like to try to chase it down now.
When it does come time to mount the steering, I may end up cutting this piece and splicing in and extension, but because of the manner in which I cut this bugger, I'll still need another one.
To add insult to injury, if I had known how this piece attaches to the steering box before I made the cut - I wouldn't have had to cut it. DOH!!!!!!!
Depending on where stuff lines up, there is a good chance you can't make the angle with the stock style joint anyway. I suggest you put this one on the back burner for awhile. You need to test fit the column after the clip is in and see what you got. You are likely looking at buying a Borg joint anyway.
(Hey even 'fenders say they weren't the best looking setups)
Yes and no. If he can use the stock joint, then I would do it. He'll have his vibe damper I am always harping is so important. I don't know what column he is using and how long it is.
And Volares look fine BTW. Certainly not as nice as a $2500 aftermarket setup, but they look like they grew there if you weld it in neatly. Just takes a little extra time. OK, maybe a lot of extra time.

Admittedly, I have a month or more (at the speed I'm moving) to resolve this issue. The column (at this point) is from the donor - 84 chrys. 5th Ave. Until the front suspension is in place (that should be late next week or the week after), I won't know if it will be usable or not (plus I'm concerned about the availability of "fancy, store-bought" steering wheels for this column).
My thinking is -
Use the end with the stock (84 Chryco) flex joint and the other end connecting to the box and if necessary split it in the middle and graft in the Borgeson stuff.....
JWCNJ45,
Thanks for the offer, but you're in N.J. (where the sewer meets the sea) and I'm in CDA. Paying $20. for freight and customs for a $25. part isn't prudent. If I can get the part number, etc I should be able to score it locally in a wrecking yard for about $20 or so.
(JWCNJ45 - just kidding about NJ)
So? Anybody got that part number?
Thanks,

Bob - Take off EH. Today we are gonna show you how to get free beer.
Doug - This guy found a mouse in his beer and he got a free 12 pack.
Doug - You take your beer bottle and stick the dead mouse in like this...
This is an excerpt of an Show called the Great White North. Where Bob and Doug Mackenzie drank beer, listened to songs and talked about stuff. It was a comedy that lasted for awhile. Sorry for highjacking the thread.
Chryco's aren't that popular around here. By finding out the part # and what else used it (from Hollanders), It'll widen my options of donor cars for the required piece.
Nathan - You're slipping back into the useless posts again.....
Ken needs the server space for more important stuff.
Later,
You could fit 100's of posts on a 3 1/2 floppy disk provided there isn't any pictures. A 100 page word document would take up about 500 kilobytes. One of his servers probally has more than 500 gigabytes.
1 gigbytes = 1 000 000 kilobytes x 500 = 500 000 000 kilobytes. The space on the server is mostly taken up by the user gallerys.
A couple random thoughts. Go to your version of Auto Zone and look at the back of a Grant steering wheel box. You will see a big listing of applications they offer wheel adapters for. Or try their website. It comes up easy on a search. I think you might be OK with the Mopar column (I'm going to dog you for having a Pentastar key on your key chain though)
If you just can't find out, let me know and I'll find out for you at the Zone.
I had a similar Mopar column in mine originally. It could have been used if I wanted too.
