Replacing Front End Components

So long story short, I have a lot of play in my front suspension and steering components. At first I thought it was my old tires, so I had them replaced and that helped, but there is still quite a lot of play. I would describe it at loose steering.

I went to get an alignment and they said they couldn't do it because of too much play in the tie rod end.

So that is going to get replaced. What else is down there, bushing wise, that I should replace to eliminate play and rejuvenate my steering?

Your replaceable parts for your steering would be the upper and lower drag link, tie rods, Trac bar, steering stabilizer. There is also the ball joints and u joints but the shop should have said something if those were bad.

As far as replaceable bushings. I believe it would be the leaf bushings and sway bar bushings.

Ball joints and steering stabilizer are all fine. Is there any merit to going aftermarket on anything? I'm looking at Moog parts, are there any aftermarket kits or parts that are better? Im not good with steering components lol.

I just had my ball joints replaced to the tune of 1000~ and they used Moog, I've always had good results when using their parts. I have an upper drag link and center link sitting on my desk waiting to get installed when I have enough to buy the lower link. I got mine off of amazon for a decent price.
Upper link Upper link
,
Center Link Center Link
,
Lower link Lower link
That I'll be buying shortly.

From what I've read and researched, the moog "problem solver" parts are basically OEM quality with the added benefit of a grease fitting for longer life and the ability to service them

In this video you can see everything that is greasable, including drive shaft ujoints. So its possible there has been some work done.

I'm thinking about XRF everything.

XRF are nice, high quality parts. Highly raved about on every diesel forum i read on, and at this point are favored over moog 99% of the time. Million mile warranty also. Had their ball joints in my old truck, just put them in my new truck. Plan on using the tie rod end kit when the time comes also

And yes, the factory tie rod ends are greaseable

Fixed it for you Miles! Neither my '08 or '11 had greaseable tie rod ends, but my '00 does.

Hmm, interesting that they change that. I just started the process of adding grease zerks to my truck last week, i think i have 6 new ones

By the way, if you choose to not have ford do that repair, there is a very high quality custom driveshaft shop in east hartford. everyone i know that builds mud trucks/cars/etc goes there, very quick service and nice products

anyways...

In 05 (or 08.. cant remember. One of the major update years) they removed the serviceable joints because they are only good if they actually get serviced, a greasable joint that is left unmaintained has a shorter life than that of a sealed unit, so they went to sealed units because apparently the majority of Ford owners dont take care of their vehicles.

That sucks! The dealer sent the driveshaft out to a shop in CT...and this shop is charging me $425 to do the work. And I have to pay an hour's labor for the dealer to R&R the shaft. Hopefully they are at least using the shop you mention so the work gets done right...

My '01 had four zerks--all on the tie rod ends. Now it has eight--four more on the new ball joints.
