i just swapped the front springs on my 2wd f100. (it had 1ton springs so i put the originals back on)
it seems to me that i might be missing a spacer or bushing of somesort that fits between the bottom of the spring and the big washer that holds them down.
im thinking this because there is a gap there that would alow the spring to come up off the seat if all tension was dropped. (such as when airborne)
so am i missing a piece or is that just how it is?
on another note, did the front bumpers ever have side supports or was it only the two frame rails holding it? i ask because im building some side support brackets...
Can't say much for the spring bushing? Never looked that close at mine in 25 yrs LOL!!
No bumper supports, only the frame mounting area. The cars back in the day had brackets(like my '64 Gal) to help support them, but not the trucks. I think the brackets were more for support in a crash then vibration. Keeps it from folding into fender. The brackets I took off my '64 were HEAVY!
yea thats what happened. hit a tree, kinked the bumper and folded the drivers fender. (not bad)
i took the bumper off, hit it with a big hammer a few times, got it straightened out and put it back on. now im making these supports so it wont happen again. using 2" angle 1/4" thick.... it wont happen again
When I was looking at the junk yard for anti swap bars there were some trucks that had a metal cone that held down the spring. On top of the spring was a small plate connected to an end link that connected to the sway bar. It's possible the cone was a spacer for for the swap bar, not sure. If I remember these where 73 trucks and above. If your truck had a disc brake conversion with a sway bar on it, maybe.
When I did my coil springs a while back the spring fit tight into the boot. Just put in the coil spring and turn it until it hits the end of the housing. Tighten down the nut with big washer on it and spring should be secure. Is it possible PO did something to coil spring housing? Do you have a pic.
The F-250's had a stronger upper retainer consisting of a heavy metal strap with two nuts welded to it. I broke the flimsy strap on my 72 F-100 and replaced it with the 250 straps I found in the JY.
There is an inverted cup shaped piece that sits under the spring, then a big washer above it:
Do you know if those are year specify? Don't remember them being on my 70 f-100 when I did my coil springs. (Going to check that this morning) I do remember see them on some, but not all year trucks when looking for sway bars. Thanks.
