Which engine is this?

When I bought this vehicle I had a different engine put in - smoking blue for several minutes until warm, low contribution on #7 cylinder.

A used 1997 engine was installed, I was told, and it seems to run well - took it down south with the family and our RV trailer last summer. It's taken some maintenance - just replaced a fuel pump and in the middle of a water pump replacement.

I have doubts about the engine date. The replacement engine didn't come with any data or history with it. Sometimes I wonder what it really is...

Here are some pics - the driver's door seems to indicate a mfr date of 10/96. A picture of the HPOP reservoir seems to suggest '95. Is there any better way to find the true engine mfr date?

Didn't figure you took a tag on the motor.

Silly things like placement of the Exhaust Back Pressure Sensor on the HPOP will tell you if its a 94-95 or if its a 96-97.

Other things for your vehicle will tell you 94-95 vs 96-97 such as brass topped radiator with a radiator cap, or a newer dagas bottle setup that they have in the 96-97's.

The Engine number is stamped on the block beside the Oil Cooler / Oil filter housing assembly...

Yeah, you might as well get the engine serial number and know for sure.

You all really are a wealth of info.

Engine number: 7.4J U2U 2496334

So 2496334 is > 201681 - so is it def a 97? Is it worth knowing what the other numbers mean?

Where do we find this highly interesting data?

According to the HPOP that motor was made November 9th 1995. Since September was the "year" change over it would be factory installed in a "1996" model vehicle.

In the end it all irrelevant every PSD from 94.5-97 is the same just a couple minor changes to some very minor parts.

Engine number: 7.4J U2U 2496334, though the photo attachment seems to show an extra digit...

So the first six numbers of 2496334 > 201681 - so is it def a 97? Is it worth knowing what the other numbers mean?

Where do we find this highly interesting data?
