Ok, I have a giant generator that I just picked up that has about 70gallons of at least 15 year old fuel in it. The generator ran on it, but the stuff smells like paint thinner and is a brownish color. I was low on fuel in the truck, so I pumped five gallons out of the tank, checked for water, and dumped in two quarts of new ATF the previous folks left here to make up for any loss of lubricity.
This thing actually started easier and sounded a bit quieter too. Tomorrow will be the first cool cold start with this mix in it, but after the way it started at work this afternoon it should be ok.
The pump and injectors are just about done anyways, so I figured at worst it'll cost me stuff that is going to be replaced anyways.
Has anyone else run fuel this old in their IDI?
Friend of mine on his farm has giant inground fuel tanks full of colored diesel, been there for something like that 15-20 years and he runs his 1954 IH bulldozer on that stuff and his 70's Case backhoe. They run fine on the stuff.
I heard diesel doesn't go bad as long as it's properly stored.
that 15 year old fuel has 2 things going for it that the new crap does not.
#1: it is not ULS fuel. it is regular OLD high sulfur diesel
#2: it is most likely 55 or 60 cetane, not the low(47) cetane diesel crap they sell these days.
a friend bought a place with 1000 gallons of old high sulfur diesel in the ground.
it was a good 20 years old. he ran it in his idi, and never had a lick of troubles.
