the crank gear goes on the slot in the crank, and the cam gear goes on the set-bolt, so the only way to change the orientation, either for the good, or for the bad, is turning one of them while the chain is off......
It appears that the chain has changed positions on one of the gears.
You remove the gears & chain with the dot on the crank gear pointing straight up and the camshaft gear dot pointing straight down that the crankshaft dot.
Then when you put the new gears & chain on they will be pointing directly toward each other.
It is the slack in the chain that is causing the problem
On the camshaft there should be a dowel that fit in a hole on the camshaft gear.
This allows the camshaft gear to only go on *one way*
The key way on the crankshaft gear only allows it to go on ONE WAY.
The trick is to have the dots on the gears to face each other when the gears go back on their respective shafts.
I should take the timing set off, then correct the alignment?
This, I think, is what Macguyver was instructing. And he implied that I would have to take the whole old timing set off together, easing the gears back, one after the other, together with the chain, in stages.
I haven't discovered what you mean by the dowel in the cam gear attachment. (I have taken the oil slinger off.) What I'm thinking about is, if I get the old timing set off, then it is clear how to turn the crank gear for alignment, but I am unsure about how I will be able to turn the cam gear, after the chain is off. I could take the gears off when the old cam gear dot is in the 6 o'clock position, I guess.
I finally took the old timing set off, and there I see the dowel you were talking about Dennis, so that the cam gear can only go back on the right way (as it should be with all truck parts).
I had to turn the crank that 1/16 of a turn to line the dots up, and I 'm putting the new gears on.
The new timing set went on nice and snug, with the dots lined up,
I've got the timing chain cover and harmonic balancer painted up and installed, the water pump is painted up and ready to go on next...... and my 302 is just loving it.
Before I make a guess, can you tell me what happened the last time the truck was running? For example... were you driving along, stopped for gas, drove a block, parked it, and the next day tried to start it and had all these problems. How long did the truck sit parked from the last time it was running to the time you next tried to start it? Did anything happen to it (that you know of) while it sat there? Did it die then decide not to start, or did it run fine the last time it was running.
