Have a 2003, 6.0, 4x4. Shortly after I accelerate, I get a clunk in the drive train. It sounds like its coming from the rear axel. I have taken it to the dealer 3 times. They tell me Ford knows about it but doesn't know what is causing it. They tell me that all 2003 4x4's "clunk" and that "they'll ge back to me" when they figure it out. Anyone know about this "clunk" and the cause?
I have a 99 1/2 F350 that had a driveline that would "clunk" when I accelerated from a stop. At traffic light for example.
I've read on this website that the problem is due to a lack of grease on the driveline splines. Whether it is the splines on the transmission end or the differential, I do not know.
I took my truck into Ford, because at the time, I was unable to do the work myself. The mechanic at the dealership greased the splines and the problem has since gone away, I really like not having to experience the clunk.
Hey there, I have a 2001 Screw 4x4 and it also started clunking when excelerating, especially when I excelerate from about 17 mph . It never did this until it hit about 35,900. miles. I took it in to the dealer, had the service rep ride with me and he heard it also. He said it sounded like something was loose. So he kept truck all day, said they couldnt find anything wrong. It still kept doing it, I brought it back again with the same result. I was so upset at the lack of their concern, so I threatened to take it to my own personal mechanic. Dealer said go ahead, good luck. My mechanic found that it is a cracked differential pin in the rear axel. Said because of what looks like poor design the pin has worn excessively and as a result is cracking and becoming out of shape and moves all around. This movement and cracking is leaving metal fragments in the oil and making it burn up. So now that the problem is diagnosed I will take it back to Ford and they can pay the bill as it was still under warranty (barely) when the first claim was made.
