Fuel Tank Issue

I have a 76 Reg Cab/ SB 2wd (F10BEB...). Shortly after I bought the truck I dropped the tank (rear of axle between rails) and replaced the sending unit. If I knew then I what I know now I would have realized that it had the evap line running to the front of the truck to a missing charcoal canister instead of thinking it was a return line. All the evap/ emissions stuff has been removed before I got it. My issue is, I can only get 10 gallons in on a fill up when the gauge reads empty. I believe it to be accurate because it calculates to about 10 miles a gallon. It's not a small tank and appears to be a 19 gal but I'm more than likely wrong. Also, I've noticed when I fill up or over a half a tank, I will get fuel stains on the side under the gas cap. The gas cap is non vented (the round smooth type) and goes on tight. The filler neck has the vent tube on the right. Is it possible this truck had dual tanks and one was removed? What do I have going on here and what is the best way to fix it? I appreciate the input.

I assume there is only one filler neck door or cap on the bed, correct?
This is what you have ?

I don't know about all of the particulars but I had the problem of fuel percolating out of the rear tank on my dual-tank F-250. It seemed that when that side was being hit by the full light of the sun it would warm up or something. I watched the fuel percolate out of the fuel filler tube down the side of the truck.

I stopped parking it where the sun would hit it all morning and I don't remember any problems after that. Sorry I can't help with your specific problem.

Sounds like you had a venting problem intensified by heat... I've never heard of gas percolating... interesting.

Upon further inspection I discovered that my vent tube is on the right as your looking at the cap opening. I have searched high and low for one to include junkyards with no luck.
Does any one have a part number or supplier? I contacted Filler neck supply about this one 1973-1976 Ford F Series Pickup Fuel Filler Neck (Front Tank RIGHT Side Vent) | Filler Neck Supply Co. It says front tank and I assume it's for the front tank on a dual tank setup and am hoping its the same... Anyone have another source?

I had the same problem and I had to take out the sending unit and hook it up out of the tank and bend the arm until it was reading accurately. Sucks to take it out again but it fixes the problem.

Well the sending unit was an ebay special so... I guess I'll carry a can of gas around and see how far it goes on "E" to verify that's the problem. Thanks for sharing..

I can't say for sure or not whether there was a dual tank option on a SWB truck but I could understand if that option was not available or at least if it was the tank and filler tube would be quite rare .. I am trying to remember if pre 1970 (evp system) vented or unvented cap .. Are you planning on putting back the evap system if no than go to a pre 1970 cap and you should be good

No chance you got the sender put back in 180 degrees off of where it was?
those are made to go in just one way. If its bassackward it would throw off your reading.

I don't remember how that could be a possibility due to the routing of the fuel line. I guess it's possible I just received the wrong one. I was able to order a filler neck through that link I posted earlier and there is another company that sells them too. Obsolete Ford Parts | Henry's Parts Depot
Even though it seemed that my gas cap seals tight, after I got to looking at the opening it was kind of bent up a little.
When I run out of gas I'll drop the tank and see whats going. A lesson for future reference: don't assume, test it out before putting the tank back in.

Just to follow up: This is what I had to do as well so thanks for the suggestion MH. The truck was on "E" so I put a can in the bed and went for a ride. I never ran out and when I got home I dropped the tank. (motorcycle/ATV jack sure comes in handy) I took the unit out and noticed that the float sat about about an two or three inches above the pick up tube at the angle it would be at inside the tank. I bent the arm so it was barely above it. It might not be 100% accurate but its a lot closer than it was.
So beware of the units you can buyoff ebay. This was the one I got: FG73A Fuel Tank Sender
