I read over at the Ranger Station the "old" style 3.0L DPFE's are made of metal and the "new" DPFE's are made of plastic. Supposedly the new style is less likely to fail b/c of internal corrosion.
What I heard from some Ford people is that the metal DPFE sometimes caused RF intereference, so that is why they are now made with plastic.
If I were you, I would stick with whichever DPFE you have on your 2002 until you have a reason to believe it is failing. The fact that my Taurus is 6 years old and my Vulcan is approaching 90K were the main reasons for my decision to replace the DPFE.....on the other hand, yours is still a baby.

This may be a silly question but what is the DPFE? And don't worry Rock, you are forgiven for replacing that part even though I don't know what it is. I just replaced a set of plugs last night that didn't look that bad but the peace of mind was worth it to know that it is now "perfect". With the mileage and design changes it sounds like you were justified.
I had a CEL come on in my truck a couple weeks ago, a couple days after experienced a serious loss of power. Turned out to be the DPFE sensor and i got it replaced. A few weeks after that i was towing my boat and it pinged very badly on all types of gas and grades of gas. I brought it back to the dealer and they did a induction cleaning to remove carbon deposits. That help out a little but it still pings pretty badly. I was wondering if i could maybe have a partially clogged egr valve or egr vacuum line that isnt throwing a CEL but is giving me problems...if so, how could i check for that and fix it. thanks for the help, i wish i could say the same to my dealer!
Hello jbabbler, I was wondering if the pinging improved noticably after you replaced the DPFE sensor? I am trying to isolate my pinging problem and I have a few ideas of how to attack it but thought I would consider this as well...
I previously came across a link to a webpage that shows the Ford OEM part #'s for different Ranger DPFE's. It seems to indicate that the so-called "newer" plastic DPFE for the 3.0L is really just the same part that they have been using on the 4.0L motor for several years now.
(Choose the year of your truck and then choose "Ford Light Truck" as the Make and Model (don't use Ranger) and then "EGR Valve Position Sensor" as the Product Line. Be sure to click the vendor's part #s for each of the various years and models to display nice pop-up images of the different DPFE styles.)
NOTE: A plastic DPFE is preferred as it is less succeptible to corrosion.
Why doesn't my 91 ranger 3.0 have an EGR, and do i have a DFPE? Whatever Ford did in 1991 worked great cuz at 155,000 miles this engine is running strong and has never pinged.
I just changed my motorcraft wires for free with my lifetime warranty they came with when i bought them 99,000 miles ago. I didn't realize i had piled on that many miles since changing them. I'm also running bosch double platnium plugs giving me around 22-24 MPGs. Everything else is motorcraft made.

Your '91 does not have an EGR system, so it does not have a DPFE sensor, either. The EGR system did not get put on 3.0L Rangers until a few years later.
Nice job on getting those MC wires replaced for free.
