Fluid is topped up, and no leaks, already checked.
The booster has always been bad on this, but this year it's simple dangerous. Last year it would make the whoosh sound, but didn't go all the way down to the floor.
The whoosh sound pretty much gives it away that it's the booster. I will replace the MC as well though.
I'm going to agree with joshofalltrades on the brakes.
Did you pull the rear wheels to look for a leak? Just seems to me if the pedal goes to the floor, either there is air in the system, or a leak somewhere.
Can you pump the brakes up and get a pedal?
The role of the booster is just that, to boost the force on the pedal. Internally there is a rod that will just pass your foot pressure onto the master cylinder if the boost stops boosting. After the truck has been off for a bit, hit the brakes a couple times to drain all the vacuum. Whats the pedal feel like then?
If I just hit the brakes, it does this big WHOOOSH sound, and pedal goes the floor, and the brake light comes on. I have to give it a couple pumps, then it brakes normal.
Fluid isn't going down, and I can clearly hear the whoosh coming from the firewall.
Once the pedal is pumped up and braking normally, it doesn't loose pressure. It stays right up no matter how hard I step on it.
the booster may be part of the problem, but certainly isn't the whole problem. the pedal to the floor plus brake light, are a sure sign of a hydraulic problem, air in the lines at minimum.
The front brakes are all new from last year, bled and everything. Never touched the rears though, never even looked at them cause I have to pull the axle out to get the drum off.
It's always had a rather soft pedal, that would go down abit lower than it should, but this year, it simply goes to the floor and doesn't really apply the brakes unless I pump it.
It's been on the road for 2 days now, and already got 300+ miles done, and brake fluid hasn't moved, so I really don't know how air can be getting in or anything leaking out all of a sudden like that.
Guess I'll hold off on the booster for now, and just replace the master, see what that does, if it fixes it, then good for me, if not, keep looking. lol
If some air got into the rear lines somewhere, it will take a few pumps to compress it enough for the brakes to apply. Once compressed and enough brake fluid is stuffed into the lines, it will work for a while and semi hold the pedal. Once stopped, the air will slowly expand and push the fluid back up towards the master causing the pedal to drop next time the truck is run.
It could be a problem with it leaking past the master as well, though I'm not sure that would hold when pumped up.
I would try bleeding the rears first, it might just need some new fluid, I think old stuff can get spongy when it absorbs water. If that doesn't help, swap out the master (make sure you bench bleed it first).
On the vacuum brake boosters if you are hearing a whoosh sound then the booster is toast.
If it's going all the way to the floor with no visible leaks then the master could be toast too. The piston in the master could be shot. Easy to check. unbolt the master from the booster, pull master out some if you see any dampness in the booster then replace both.
If it's dry, just swap out the booster first and then see how it acts. If you no longer have the whoosh but still have the pedal issue then do the master cylinder. No need spending any more money then necessary.
John, you got any room in that van for some, "33's"? LMAO Do you know what I am referencing? I bet there are probably more on here that do know than I realize.....but just curious. Course those, "gramos" might skip a lil bit since you ain't stopping so well. LMAO
