If your truck came with the FOB to open the doors remote, but not the keypad on the door, you can add one. Originally the keypad was hard wired and was an expensive option. Several years later the newer keypads were RF signal just like the FOB. If you have or had FOB, then you have the keyless module on the truck (mounted to firewall infront of the emergency brake).. All you have to do is buy the newer style RF keypad, stick it to the door, and program like the FOB. I just did this on a 2002 F150.
Hey Steve,
Is the keypad on the 02 Explorer wireless also? I need to replace the door and the best deal is on one with a keypad. Can I reprogram an old one?
Im not sure the 2002 is wireless. I would think the wires are already on the door (even if you didnt have a key pad) if you go that route. You had to have a FOB as original equipment to guarantee you have the receiver (keyless module) if you go with the transmitter (wireless) version.
Very cool. The max allowed Key Fobs is 4 (and 8 keys).
So a person can have this + 3 key fobs. I guess u cant unlock the doors with it while truck is running (winter warm up), because the fobs wont work in this situation either. It must have a replaceable battery??
