I just got finished changing my fuel filters .the top engine mounted fuel filter went fine . I purged it as the book says and started the engine . I expected problems on the frame mounted filter. I herd of the housing bowl breaking so I took care removing the bowl ....however when I when removed the plug the body of the sensor came off with the plug. when I removed the housing and cleaned it I think I got the sensor back together and I reassembled the filter with new element and o ring I purged the system and started the truck it ran for 30 sec and stopped after many re purges I realized I did not have the drain valve tight and no fuel was going to the engine. I tightened the valve and I have purged many more times and it will not start, I turn the key on wait 30 sec turn off and try again does anybody have any ideas?
disconnect the batteries, open up the fuel lines on the engine mounted filter again. let it sit for a bout 20 minutes. then reconnect everything, press the fuel cutoff switch in the passenger side kick panel, purge air procedure again, and start.

The part about the body of the sensor coming off with the plug happened to me too. When that happened to me i lost one of the very very small springs that goes inside the body of the sensor. without both of those springs in there it will not complete the circuit to give you the water in fuel indication if you get water in your fuel. I ordered a replacment sensor online and about 2 hours after i did i found the small spring i was missing. I was able to take the plug/sensor apart, install the spring, and check with a multimeter that the sensor would work if grounded out with water. MAKE SURE YOURs STILL WORKS!!!!!!

Exact same thing happened to me except one of the tabs that holds the sensor on broke. Just happened to find the 2 springs and put it back together with a little super glue until the dealership got the part in for me. There are 2 tiny springs if you didn't happen to notice when you put it back together!
Not sure if I would test to see if I could get a WIF light. If you do it will record it. I would be happy if it just ran and get a new WIF sensor. If you get a new sensor be careful how tight you screw it in it is plastic on plastic threads and I thought I stripped mine for a moment.
I would also check and see if you have the bowl to the stop. I spoke to a mechanic at my dealership once and he commented that he did an filter change and took it out for a test drive and it died. He found that when he was screwing the bowl back on it just made contact with the stop and he thought it was on, but it really needed 1 more turn to completly seat. Be careful because he also said he has seen several with broken bowls because of over tightening. It is tough to see but check to see if it is all the way on and the stops should line up.
This is the reason I pay the dealer to do this.......we have payed $50,000+ for these trucks and shy away from a couple hundred bucks to get the filters changed? If we can afford the truck in the first place we should be able to afford the needed service....its not like the fuel filters need changing ever month.
Thanks for every ones help and advice. I tried 6 more 30 sec key turns and it started . all the horror stories I have read about on this forum, I started to panic. However I don't know if the little springs are installed properly so I will probably find a replacement on the internet and swap it out for a new one so I am sure it works . This is the first time I have asked a question on this forum and it sure is nice to get answers and opinions thanks again for all the advice.
