Well I just had my power steering pump replaced and the serpentine belt and had the trans serviced (If you are going to change yours and you have a 6.0 diesel, on some the radiator needs pulled and you will need a special wrench that you'll have to order to pull the fan off so you can get the shroud out of the way). Anyhow, I took a weekend trip and the front bearings start grinding around turns so I get to deal with that now too.
Is the dynatrac kit worth the upgrade? Any of you running it?
I'm looking at about 900 for stock bearings here locally, 1 yr warranty only. That's both sides. What else will I need to change as part of a unit bearing replacement (seals, etc)?
If you are keeping your truck for a long time, then the Dynatrac kit is well worth the price. When you use their kit you will only have to do it once then just check the bearings once a year. If the stock unit bearings fail, it can cause a lot of other problems. I have seen rotors get scarred, fenders get smashed from debris and wheels fall off, not a pretty sight. Oh and while you are in there, replace the u joints. I am still trying to decide on whether or not to buy a new truck, if I decide to keep my '08 then I will buy the Dynatrac kit along with a lot of other "upgrades".
I'm gonna have this truck for a while, but I think I'm going to go with stock replacements. I just don't have the time to get the dynatrack kit at this point with my only vehicle broke down, and the factory units gave me 95,000 miles. Hopefully I'll get better out of the moogs or timkens...
Having said that, do you need to replace the axle seal at the knuckle when you replace the bearing? Haynes doesn't say whether this is necessary or not.
I ordered Moogs from RockAuto for 349 a piece. Best price I could find. They listed Timkens at 377, which I wanted, but when I tried to order them found out they were backordered. My truck's a 2007. Even the cheap no name bearings in the local stores are almost 300 bucks.
So I assume I don't need to play with the axle seal in the knuckle?
Let us know how the Moog's are. I read their literature and they say they fix the weak areas of the stock unit with this upgraded unit. Curious how they work as I will be doing mine this summer.
Cool, yall I appreciate the help, I'm gonna tackle these this weekend, I'll let you know how it goes.
Did you check with Tousley Ford Parts Depot ?
Most of the time there prices are very good. I have gotten
into the habit of checking with them before I order anywhere else.
I didn't as I wasn't aware of them. At any rate, ball joints are bad too. What is required to get those off? Looks like I gotta take the spring out to get on the nut on top.
