Unless I order one I can purchase a Torin brand one here in town at Tractor Supply for $220. Although, I am intrigued to maybe build a tripod system with a chain lift attached to it. Good price for the Torin brand?
There's been a lot of ideas suggested here if he wanted to do it out side his garage. I thought he wanted to do it inside and that is the reason i suggested a cherry picker hoist for a low ceiling garage. But if out side there are a lot of ways to do it. My main tool for out side i use weekly is a 59- Ferguson TO-35 tractor with a front loader bucket on it. I have other attachments built for it to hoist roof trusses up for a single story house. With it ,my chain hoist and my cherry picker , i can lift almost any thing i am working on. So , if it's going to happen in side his garage i still suggest , borrowing , renting or buying a cherry picker hoist to use inside. Spending 35 plus years as a carpenter i have seen and repaired the damage people have done to their garage ceilings by pulling down on a truss that was engineered to be pushed down on only. Fair warning and my $.02 worth .

Yes it has to be done in the garage. I have a single stall driveway and nothing outside to do it with. I can either buy the Torin Model one at Tractor Supply for $219 today or wait until next weekend and the few people around here that have one I can borrow from. I have ruled out the ceiling idea for the reasons mentioned. I am a perfectionist and not willing to risk an issue with my living room and bedroom upstairs.
You all have a lot of cool ideas here. If I had property to move it around on, I would consider some of them. I don't always think outside of the box on some of these "what do I do now" issues when I come across them. That's what I enjoy about this website so much! People like all if you willing to help out! Thanks!
If you can borrow one once, then you can borrow it again to install later right? Then save your money and go the borrow route.
Just have it all ready to pull out (a auto trans takes a few more minutes to disconnect) in case the lender is waiting in the drive way to get it right back?
And take some pics for us, cause without pics it didn't happen.

Okay got a hoist I'm going to go get. So next dumb question. Where on a 400ci block am I attaching the bolts with the chain in order to hook onto it. I am guessing there are some open threads I the block itself in the front and back? I will be disconnecting the transmission and lifting the engine only at this time.
Some folks us a carb lifting plate, I am not a fan of that move. So use a a bolt out of the intake manifold, one on the back l/h side and the front r/h side meaning the chain is diagionial across the top of the motor.
Some folks us the trans mount bolt hole and the power steering mount holes, but depending on your eng stand you might need that trans bolt hole to mount a arm too.
And remember to take off as many pieces and parts as possible, cause the lighter the better. The carb/intake manifold is like 50+LBS, exhaust manifolds, p/s pump and brackets, starter ect...

Yeah I got off the power steering pump, carb, alternator, etc....
...and yes I figure I will need the transmission bolt holes.....I saw some threaded holes in the heads on the front driver side and rear passenger side. Those would work? That would put the chain diagonal across the top of the engine.
I assume the transmission will just "disconnect" when I unbolt it from the engine? Anything I should know when I unbolt it? I have my book to read over as well. Just asking.
Those holes are in the heads yes? You should be ok using them, I have in the past. That is where you attach a leveler if used. See the red circles in pic #2 not the X on top.
Is the trans a standard or auto?
Standard is easier than a auto IMO, have a floor jack to lift up just a bit on the front edge of the trans to prevent it from falling down and causing a "pinch" when you pull the motor.
I purchased a chain hoist for 20$ of craigs list (old made in the states) put up some scaffold and borrowed a steel channel from a friend, just an idea,,,a good tree, ask somebody you know might have an engine hoist
wow that's quite a set up back in the day we used 3 or 4 small (10ft or so) tamarack logs bolted together at the top like a T-pee and a come along...it was rickety but it worked. I had a pic at one time I'll have to see if I can find it.
