Hi Folks.
I'm new to the Ford Truck Forum. I run a small company. We have a small fleet of Ford F250s and F350s.
I believe I have a failed fuel pump on a 2000 F350. I replaced the fuel filter and the pump relay. It's a flat bed, and the pump is in the tank. I was able to sneak between the frame rails, remove the top cap, and take a photo of the pump.
Questions. Can anyone tell me what type of pump this is? Part number? Most importantly, how do I get this out of the tank?
First of all, it appears that you might be able to reach your hand in there and unplug the wires. I would do that and check to see if there is power getting to that point before you waste time and money changing the pump. If there is power, it's probably a bad pump. At that point, either you drop the fuel tank or you lift the bed off to change the pump if there isn't enough room to do it otherwise.
Good idea about checking the electrical connection.
I can get to the pump without dropping the tank, but I'm not sure how it's attached. Is it twist off? I can't see if it's bolted to the bottom because the skid plates are still in place.
In the event that I have to replace this pump, can anyone help with a part number?
Looks like a stock pump, and if I remember correctly when we changed my sons it snaps in place. I'm thinking the tabs to the left and right side of the picture holds it in.
Hey, I always appreciate when folks come back and tell everyone how the problem was solved.
I had never pulled a pump out of a fuel tank on a Ford. I read that some just twisted out. I tried that on this one, but it wouldn't budge. I had limited access, as I did not drop the tank. I could sqeaze between the frame rails on this flat bed set up. I could stick my arm in the tank, but couldn't see what I was doing. So everything was by looking at the above photo...and feel.
Bubba chimed in that the two tabs were holding it to the bottom of the tank. I was able to push on the lower part of the tabs. This freed the pump.
I put a multimeter on the electrical connections, turned on the key and found I was getting voltage to the pump. (I had already replaced the relay. The old addage...Start with the easy stuff and work toward the PITA stuff.)
The Pump was bad. Once I had it out, the replacement and re-installation were self explanitory.
