Well hello all! i hope everyone has had a good winter.
now we have some warmer weather I was going to start working on the truck again. There are a few things I need to do. but one of the tings is our steering feels loose. I was told by a mec. that it was the shaft. I m having a hart time telling on line what part i need.. do you all have any recommendations or other thoughts for the loose steering?

Well I just pulled the shaft, It seemed like there could be some play there, so i put it in a vise and crimped it just a bit tighter. This might have helped a bit but I could not tell for sure. I have replaced the gear box before on an other truck with the same problem and it did not work at all. so I am hesitant to replace the gear box till I know for sure where the problem is... is there any good way to test the all the components other than wiggling them till I find where it is loose?
what are the most common place for it to be loose?
One inherent weakness is the rag-joint at the lower end of the shaft. Holdover from the horse-and-buggy days. Most aftermarket shafts have real live u-joints at both ends, and are much tighter between the inner and outer sections. But you still should check all the moving parts "downstream" of the box, as mentioned above.
