lockout change

I have a 1979 f 150 ranger 351M 4x4. my lockout broke so i am trying to change it and upgrade it to a new style.I took out the old one and went to put in the M&M lockout hub and it wont go down to where the axle ring wont get into the groove.Now i don't know if it has to be but there is a nut behind it with 4 square spaces and i dont think that it should come out because of the bearings behind it.

Try pushing the axle out from behind the knuckle by taking a screwdriver and prying on the axle yoke, this should move the axle out enough to expose the groove.
