I have a 79 bronco with 35s and 410 gears. the engine is a 400 with an edlebrock intake and a 625 cfm 4 bbl carb. I plan on using the bronco for mudding and want to add a better cam and roller timing chain. Any ideas on what cam to use? I would think that a larger cam would be a good idea for mudding. Any idea of horse power gains.
Comp Cams makes cam kits (K-kits) that have everything you need. Cam, lifters, springs, retainers, locks, and roller chain. Any good supplier will be able to hook you up.
I mention this because it is a good idea to match the springs and cam.
Coondawg is right on track. I have been running their RV cam (273 adv duration .500 lift) for years and am very happy with it. The increased lift means you must buy new springs also or risk (like 99%) coil bind. This has been a very reliable cam for me and really perks the engine up. Can't estimate HP gain, but is substantial. This cam is designed for the lower RPM bands which I assume is where you will be doing most of your running.
