I have a 400 with a automatic behind it. And a 351m with a standard on it. What will I have to swap the to put one motor in the other. I know the flywheel and harmonic balancer. Will those parts swap with no problem? Or will it mess up the balancing of the motor.
Harmonic balancers are specific to the engine, but both 351M and 400 engines have the same crankshaft imbalance (28 oz-in), and both engines use the same flywheel and flexplate parts, with the same external balance.
Harmonic balancers can be interchanged, usually without any problem, but for absolute safety, you should use the harmonic balancer specific to the engine.
So, not only do you not need to change the harmonic balancer, but you shouldn't change the harmonic balancer (if it's the correct part in the first place).
A side note on harmonic balancers: There is an elastic (rubber?) ring that deforms to allow the balancer to do its job. This material degrades over time. I noticed a much happier smoother engine when I threw out my old original one and plunked down about a $100.00 for a new one.
