Unhappy F150 problems

Some advice is needed here,
I have a 96 F150 4x4, w/300 cu in inline six.
Recently it started acting as if it were out of gas eve tho it has 2 full tanks. It sputters and stalls out, but then it starts right back up. It will do this a couple times then stays running. Any ideas on whats going on ? I don't have a lot of money to take it to the shop, so I need to get this right.

Find a local parts store that will pull the codes free, and test the fuel pressure at the rail when it's stalling. Sears sells a good FP gauge for ~$25.

I tested the fuel pressure at the rail as you suggested and came up with a pressure of 45 to 50 psi. Both while it was running and in the off position.
I can take it to the local auto zone store tomorrow and have them help me to check for any error codes. If there are no codes that show up, Then where would I go to figure out whats going on ?

Pull the Idle Air Control valve off, and see if it is all full of gunk. If it is, clean it out with throttle body cleaner, and clean the throttle body out too.

Is it possible that I may be having some sort of a problem with my fuel selector valve ? The truck does have 110,798 on it.
I also took the time to trace out all my vaccum lines yesterday and couldn't find any loose or broken lines anywhere. I took a guess that it may have been vaccum related.
When I go to the Auto store today, I'll get some Throttle body cleaner while they check the codes. Hopefully a combination of these will turn something up.

I just had a similar problem with my 88 F-150. If I could get it started, it would run very rough and stall out. I checked the codes and came up with 87. This translates to Fuel Pump Circuit Relay Failure. When I was checking them out, I found that one of the wires leading into the relay was corroded and did not have a good connection. I cleaned up the end of the wire reconnected it and it fired up like a champ. Make sure you get the codes checked. It can cut through a long chase. You can check them yourself with a fairly inexpensive code reader or by jumping the EEC unit as explained in either Chilton or Haynes manuals. Hope this helps.

I went to the local Auto store and had the codes checked, They came up clean. That is no # sequence showed.. The tech crawled under the truck and tapped the feul selector valve with a small hammer and what do you know ? The problem quit....He suggested I get a new one soon and replace it. Thanks for the help and ideas on where to go.

Even if nothing's wrong with the engine, you should still get a code. Pull them yourself and see.
