I swore when GM sucked up to the fed I was done with them. I've always loved Ford for their fun cars...I owned a Boss 302, but now am ready to get serious with a truck.
I've run diesel Suburbans since the late eightys and love them but once my 96 needs putting out to pasture I'll buy Ford and it looks like Excursion is my next work truck.
I'm a contractor so will be stowing tools and gear in it and it will be getting hard use. Just wanted to check in with you guys to see if I'm headed in the right direction. I won't be towing much so wonder about the diesel engine sizes and mileage differences.
I really like the look of the trucks and diesel is a must! I must make black smoke!
Suburbans and a Tahoe were the main family movers at my house until I found my first Excursion. It was the best move I ever made. My only concern is that I will probably never be able to replace it. Hopefully, I can enjoy it until the kids are grown. After that, perhaps, the wife and I will settle back into a Ford pickup for our camping needs.
Really get to know the search function. There are numerous posts covering this question. The 7.3 was the undisputed king as the 6.0 suffered from many plagues. You can only get the 7.3 in the MY's of 2000 to 2003, after that the 6.0 was the only diesel offered. The 7.3 accepts mods better but probably won't make as much power. The slim reliability of the 6.0 fades fast after modding, and there is a boat load of maintenance, add-ons, updates, and things to keep eyes and ears on.
The Ford has the best super-sized SUV, it just depends on what engine you get. I like the v-10 for the ease of use, but I know you want a diesel. Good luck, grab a couple of beers, search and read away. The 6.0 power stroke diesel forum and the 2000 to 2003 7.3 power stroke diesel forum is where you'd likely get your best information.
Welcome ! They do not make a Diesel Suburban that can out pull, tow or last an Excursion......you will love it.....I am partial to the 7.3L......low mileage (under 100k) are getting very hard to find........you can still pick one up under 200k......mine runs better at 150k than it did at 75k
The 6.0 needs a few mods to get it bulletproof......but then it is golden. Headstuds, EGR delete, and oil cooler I think are the problems
. The slim reliability of the 6.0 fades fast after modding, and there is a boat load of maintenance, add-ons, updates, and things to keep eyes and ears on. Wow, i think you have it backwards, the 6.0 it more reliable after you do mods This great forum will help you make informed decisions with all ford trucks
I owned a suburban as well, im a contractor too. I do alot of drywall work and the X is the right tool for the job. The X can carry drywall sheets inside with no problem. Perfect for those rainy or snowed out days. I can also carry a 12 foot ladder inside. This is the best tool ever. Go for it.
Thanks guys...yeah I've been reading a bunch of the posts....Very active forum, like that.
The first time I saw an Excursion was at our Cenex store fueling and I liked it immediately. There are none of these in m y country so that suites me just fine and 809taino hit it on the nose regarding sheet goods fitting inside.
I also like seeing some of these trucks hanging of the sides of mountains and up in the bush. I kinda felt they might be a bit to downtown for me to work out of. I like a nice truck but i'm not worried too much about some scratches on the sides driving through brush.
You wont regret buying an Excursions. they are the kings of SUVs for a reason. Lots of info here on "how to's" and such. you can save tons of money doing the work yourself when it does need servicing.
i myself was/still a GM fanboy. dont get me wrong. i always had Fords all of my life. But got to admit...those GM LS motors are monsters. I still own a 00 Silverado with an LQ9 6.0 liter swap (440RWHP on motor) (575rwhp on 150shot NOS) this is my toy.
My gran pappy use to say..."This Family will always buy AMERICAN CARS/TRUCKS..whether FORD or Chevy, one thing we will not buy is jap crap"
