oil pump

My oil pressure gauge is reads normal at times then drops below normal and goes back and forth. When it gets down below normal where it reading almost nothing the motor starts making a ticking noise and I shut the engine off for awhile and it will run fine. Could the oil pump be going to low. Iam thinking off putting a mechanical gauge on it for a better reading but i dont want to blow my engine it is a 93 f150 with a 302.

How fast is the engine running when the gauge goes low? Does revving the engine bring the pressure up? How many miles on the truck? I assume you checked the oil level?

seems like the engine runs faster when the gauge goes low. Revving the engine doesnt bring it back up. its got a 130,000 miles on it.
