muddhog well my oil gauge is not reading right. when i stop it moves all the way past low. check engine light comes on then i pull off and it moves back to middle and the light goes off till next time. replaced sending unit.
sounds to me like you may accually have low oil pressure. how many miles are on the engine? I would instal a mechanical oil pressure gause to see what the accual pressure is. may be time for new bearings.
My dad had a problem exactly like this on his aerostar, the engine light came on and the gauge want down only at idle, but it was an easy fix. He just replaced the sender and all went back to normal.
I think I would still put the mechanical gauge on first thing. but as to rebuild or crate. I guess it depends on our mechanical ability and your finances. A cheap quick Bearing and ring replacement or a full out machine work job, boreing, and all. I can't annswer for you. I personaly would probably do it all my self. minus the machine work since I don't have that equipment, it would have to be sent out.
i have autometer ultra-lite gauges in my 460 and at idle is runs 45 psi and idle it up to 1000 rpm and you get 65 pounds. this is on my brand new reman engine though
Is the engine making any noises? Any knocking, ticking? With it moving that low it should be making some type of noise. Also look at it when you first start the engine and drive, if it does the same thing something related to the gauge is at fault. Oil thins out at higher temperatures and would give you a lower reading, thus if the the gauge did the same thing, it would not be pressure related. If no noises are present could be the cavitations in the oil pump are worn out giving low pressure, just a thought. Tell us what you find.
frist it reads high and in a few mins then it goes down in the mid then when i stop it goes pass low then engine light comes on then when i take off it go's back to mid.engine has a knock.
Sorry to hear that . Your sending unit and guage are working fine. Rod or main bearings are shot, probably both. Among other things possibly wrong with it. Time for a rebuild, take it to a shop or you and a knowledgable friend do it before its too late. You might be able to salvage some components before you completely fry the engine. The reason the oil pressure is high at first is because oil is thick and viscous at low temperatures, then as it heats up it thins out, causing less pressure. Good luck in your endeavours!
