Replace camshaft synchronizer

Hi everyone,

I got the P0340 code for my husbands 2000 f150 4.2L

Long story: Husband deployed, a week later all 3 of our vehicles crapped out and while I can change alternators, belts, fuel pumps and the like, I have no clue about the camshaft synchronizer. I thought it may have just been the sensor, but when I took it off, the shaft was filled with metal shavings and there was no magnet to be found, also the little metal tab on the inside was gone as well.

Does it sounds like it needs replacing as well as the sensor? I've taken off some hoses to get to it, but even still it's an extremely tight fit and I have pretty tiny hands, could someone possibly list everything that I need to disconnect to get the max amount of room to do this?

Thanks for any help anyone can provide, it would be greatly appreciated!

I take the EGR valve off and pull out the metal tube the goes into the water pump. Be aware the syncronizer has to be timed like a distributor, #1 cylinder at TDC on compression stroke, and there is a tool the fits on the syncronizer to put it in time.
