So i have a 86 f150. My steering box has a good bit of play in it. Looking aroud at lmc they list the same box from a 80-96. I have access to a 96 f150. I can probably get the box out of it for 50 bucks.
Now my question is. Does anyone know that all these years having the same box to be true? Id like to have someone that knows for sure tell me.
Also my ps pump leaks. From best i cam tell its the housing. Its all covered in grime. Lmc lists 2 different boxes. 1 up to about 86-90 somewhere in there and the other 91-96.
Can i scavenge the ps pump from the same 96 if i get the bracket or is it a completely different animal?
Id say if LMC catalog says it to be so then it probably is. But i agree.. thats an awfully long year span for fitment. Call and have your local auto parts store look it up. You may figure out buying a new gear with a core exchange is only a few bucks more and not risk getting one that steers floppy also or leaks. But to each their own. I just changed mine out on a 86 F150.
Bronco and F-series (100/150/250/350) power steering gearboxes will interchange from 1980 to 1996 as I understand it.
You can get seal kits for the PS pump at a local auto parts store. They're really inexpensive. You can also get rebuild kits for the steering gears and they come with new bearings and seals as well, if you want to go that route. A rebuild kit is a little more expensive for the steering gear though.
If the box in the donor truck is in good shape, go for it.
Local price is 149 for box and 90 for the core. If i could save that 100 i could put it into a new pump. They list 2 different pumps for 80-96 split about 87. Ill stick with an oe style pump.
