5 Star Tuner *Update!!!*

So I will be ordering my tuner tomorrow with the 3 tunes. I`m just wondering if I should just go with the 89 octane tune across the board (economy, towing, performance) or how much of a PITA would it be running the economy 87, towing 89, and 91/3 performance. I`m thinking it would be a pain with the different octane tunes? does anyone have any thoughts on this that has one?

As did I.

OP, did you talk to 5Star about your question? They may know whether or not it would be worth the hassle.

Yes i did. I wanted the most performance possible. I dont want to run the 93 octane all the time. And ive always ran 89. I tow a TT and when i fill up on the way home i dont want to have just enough to get home and then fill with 87 only to leave on the next trip and have a half tank of 87 when i will need 89 with the tune. I'll probably just end up getting the 89 tunes! It will save alot of agravation!

Got mine UPS today - installing headers and banks exhaust this weekend. Manifolds finally off today after a serious battle. But to your question I got the 87 (3 tunes) I wouldn't get the higher octane tunes unless you are willing to use that gas when you use that tune. Hard to do unless you fill up only when empty. I'd just stick with the 87 set.

I got the 87 performance/Tow, 87 econ, and 91 performance/tow. for my 06 f150. I actually get worse mpg on the Hwy with the econ tune because when i go to the river there is a long steep grade on the way and it down shifts early in the hill and stays there, but it does give better mpg for daily driving.
the pert/tow tune is more fun as a daily driver when getting on the fwy!!

It is a pain switching tunes. When I first wanted to try out the 91 tune I tried to get as close to E as possible. I only have a 30 gal tank, it would suck to fill that 44 gal to switch to the 91

Ok. I ordered the tuner yesterday with the 89 tunes. I will be taking trips this year every 2 weeks. So trying to switch between octanes would have been impossible! Thanks everyone. Oh ya i also ordered there Y pipe.

Update!

OK I got the tuner and Y-pipe today. very quick. I ordered it on fri. afternoon, but it was too late to ship out, had to wait till Monday. got it today (wed. afternoon) 2 1/2 days very good. I installed the Y-pipe this afternoon, did it at work, the hardest part was cutting the old one out. had to make a few cuts because I didn`t want to cut it too short initially! one thing I noticed was the black carbon (exhaust) leaking around the collectors at the exh. manifolds. the bolts were tight and there is no leak, so I`m thinking it was from the back pressure from the necked down stock Y-pipe. after a test drive the exhaust didn`t have any different sound so I`m really wondering why For did this?! it did seem to have a bit more power, but that could just be me?

Then when I got home I updated the programmer and then started with the perf. tune.
On a quick drive it felt the same from a stop, but after 20mph it really woke up! the shifts are higher and firmer. had a sporty feel. when I went WOT the truck downshifted much quicker and took off like it lost 2000lbs LOL, maybe not quite, but it was a major difference!and it will now rev to where I feel it should have from the beginning!

Towing tune. hard to tell here until get the trailer out of storage, but the shifts held on longer and when it did shift they were very firm. hard to tell with anything else with no load on it.

Economy tune. only drove it a short distance so far with this tune. the shifts come sooner and it goes into lockup (I think) very quickly. so far so good. didn`t really notice if it has less power in this program, because I wouldn`t hot rod it normally anyway and that is not what the econ. tune is for.

I am going to run with the econ. tune most of the time because my commute to work is very short and I don`t get over 35 mph. so I will see how it goes. just filled it the other day, so I will see how the mileage looks in another 4-5 weeks. yes I put very few miles on it, 2k miles since last Sept.!!!

Thank you 5 Star!
