6.0L

I need to buy another truck soon! And I do not want a new one! My question, is the 6.0 diesel really a bad engine? or are the problems with it overrated?
Or is the 6.4 better? Or maybe an older truck with the 7.3 and low miles? I don't mind doing some upgrades if needed.
Many Thanks
R.K.
P.S. I am trying to do some research but time is limited!
P.S.S. I need my truck to be a solid dependable work truck that I can trust driving across country. This has not been an issue in the past always bought new. but they way too much money now in my humble opinion!

You're in the 6.0 forum... You're going to get a 6.0 answer.

BTW hardly anyone would choose the 6.4 over anything.

Well I liked my 7.3 too. We sold it because it was a 250 and not a 350 and wasn't rated for our camper, but also and even more important, it only had a drivers air bag. I would never, ever, forgive myself if God forbid, we were in an accident and my wife didn't survive because of no air bag. We took a detour over to durablast land for a horrible couple of years, so I can attest that all the makes have their issues.

The 7.3 is generally regarded as an engine that can take more neglect and has less preventative measures that need to be attended to than the 6.0. Biggest downside is that the 6.0 can be had with one of the best and sturdiest automatics ever put on the planet, the Torqshift (or a manual trans); Whereas the Auto on the 7.3 can be an issue. There are things one can do to make the 7.3's Auto very reliable tho, but it will never be a Torqshift.

I've owned both, towed with both and my 6.0 stock is more potent than my mildly tuned 7.3 and just flat out gets better mileage in all situations. There were some pretty desirable changes (IMO) on the '05 and up 6.0s (chassis mainly) and they continued to improve the powerplant right up to the end of the run. So my usual advice to prospective 6.0 owners is to read up on it so you are aware of potential trouble areas (pretty much all are known and solutions available), but then again I'd say that should be done for any used vehicle you're considering. AND, again my opinion, buy the latest lowest mileage one you can afford.

I'm sure others will be along shortly -- and do ask the same question in the 7.3 forum...

Good luck with whatever you decide, and FTE will help you along with whatever you do end up with -- for that matter, post in the appropriate forum any truck you have your eye on and you'll get lots of pre-purchase advice!
