Hello to all. New to the site. I recently purchased a 1981 f100. It is in really good condition, but my mechanic said that it is missing the fan shroud. It has the 4.9 liter engine. I checked many places without any luck. I was hoping that you experts could guide me in the right direction. Thank you. Joe.
Here's some places in New Jersey that have a truck sitting around with a six cylinder in it. I did a search for an engine, but they may have a fan shroud laying around somewhere still.

They also make universal chrome shrouds that you could possibly try to fit in there.
As it turns out, maybe your truck didn't have a fan shroud from the factory!
I heard from another member on here (can't remember who) that some trucks didn't even come with one. I don't know of any way to verify whether or not a vehicle came with one or whether some trucks didn't have one, but having one on certainly doesn't hurt! It really helps pull/push (depending on the direction of the fan blades) the air through the radiator and keep your truck cool.
Looking at that page, I don't see any shrouds for 4.9 engines before 1987 - maybe that's when they started including shrouds? My 1980 4.9 did not come with a shroud, just a narrow bit of plastic that is more of a fan guard than anything else.
1980-1984: 4.9L with SUPER cooling and/or factory A/C had the larger radiator and a fan shroud.
1980-1984: 4.9L with regular and extra cooling had the smaller radiator and a fan guard.
The fan shroud that fits the SUPER cooling radiator will not fit on the regular or extra cooling radiators as the radiators are too small. The standard and extra cool raditator are aproximately a foot shorter in length than the Super Cooling radiator.
Need to determine which radiator you have...
1985 and 1986 shrouds will not work as the radiators changed as well as the radiator supports for those years.
My mechanic says that the vehicle has A/C, but that it was dealer installed and not factory installed. He said that the dealer put in a flex fan to create more air flow and must have removed the shroud because the flex fan is bigger than the original. I guess this changes things. My mechanic is not a fan (no pun intended) of the flex fan. He said that the factory fan and the shroud would've done a better job cooling than the flex fan alone. Should I try to change it back?
The aluminum aftermarket fans have a bad habit of flying apart and going through the radiator. If you could go to the junkyard, maybe you could score the whole A/C radiator, fan shroud and fan off a truck with A/C and a 4.9.
RE: flex fans. Several years ago there were a lot of problems with flex fans flying apart. Several mechanics were killed and many were injured. The mech. would be leaning over the front of the vehicle and revving up the engine, working the carb linkage from the engine compartment. Sometimes rev. too high or fan cracked .....boom. Not pretty. I remember that Ford had a recall on the fan blades.
Greetings to all. I have a 86 F150 2WD C6 with the 300.I installed a double row radiator a couple of years ago after constant overheating and the ICM failing as soon as the engine got close to 200F. Prior to that, a water pump and a 160F thermostat. I replaced the heater core about 6 years ago, I replaced the 1BBL carb, starter, steering gearbox, power steering pump, all the brake lines, exhaust pipes caty converter, muffler and tail pipe.. Ball joints and all the steering arms. New Falken Tires 235/75R15 $650.00 Freeze plug also. So enough of the bio Here's my question: I cannot find a Fan Shroud and since I have a double row radiator do I need one? Constant operating temp is about 180 at the thermostat housing. A little tip to keep those pesky ICM's from shutting off the truck at the worst time is to monthly unbolt the ICM, clean the used Dielectric grease off the sur\aces and slather fresh grease on. I've been able to loose only one ICM in the past 8 months. Sorry it's a long post, but Id figure I'd answer all the usual questions up front.
