Remote Start Question

My new 2012 F-150 " Lariat " is equipped with the factory installed remote start. It has never failed to work until this morning. I stood in our kitchen, hit the " lock " button once, and the " remote start " button twice as I always do. I went out a few minutes later, and the truck was not running. Did it again and the lights flashed, the horn chirped, but still it did not start. Went downtown, parked it, and tried it when I got out and was walking away and it worked fine. Have tried it a few times since then: starts sometimes, other times only the lights flash and horn chirps. Before I have to drive 55 miles to the dealer, does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem may be? I appreciate all your help. Thanks!

mine is irritating also. some days I can get it function from 200 to 300 feet away. other times i can not get it to lock the door standing 4 feet away. i was thinking about changing the battery.

other goofy thing is sometimes it turns the seats on most times it does not. really weird thing is when it does seem to turn them on it is warm, not really cold???

My factory remote start system is a joke. It's really a remote horn button that occasionally starts the truck. Just another part of questionable electronics that Ford selects to keep us owners "happy".

Common causes are poor contacts in the hood and door switches. Contacts aren't, yet, as bad as earlier F Series trucks which caused our interior lights to have a mind of their own. But it's along the same lines. One of these days, I'm going to try spraying each switch down with some WD40 or similar.

Glad to learn that someone else is also experiencing the random function to the heated seats as they relate to using the remote horn button (oops make that start system).....

Mine stoped locking unlocking and remote start wouldnt work so I tryed the other key and it works just fine. It's most likely a dead bat.

In the owners manule it says when the truck honks twice and flashes lights it means you tryed to remote start the truck more than twice with in 30 minutes.
But if you did it first thing in the morning like that I'm not sure why it would do that.

Also on mine the heated and cooled seat functions won't turn on when I remote start even though I had them on when I turned off the truck.

Thanks for the reply, Hunt89, but the truck is only 6 weeks old. So the dead battery issue is not probable. At least I am not alone with this issue. My heated seats also do not turn on when I remote start the truck. This issue just started; prior to this the remote start worked fine. Keep the comments coming, and I'll keep you all posted. Thanks for all your responses.

When is a dead battery NOT probable? ***** happens. It is a cheap fix - and something to try before getting all huffy about Ford's "questionable" electronics... or it could be operator error. Just a thought.

One more thing - it is NOT just "six weeks old" - the truck is a year old. You have OWNED it for six weeks but it has been sitting in a lot at Dearborn and your local dealer for most of the last year... batteries die when they aren't used, just as easily and as often as when they are used.

Just because a truck has 6 miles on the odometer doesn't make it new. Sitting outside all that time has aged the truck.

I have to agree with NotMyHusbandsF150. They probably put the cheapest battery they could in it and those don't have a long life.

Another though I had was, are the heated and cooled seats programed to come on when the truck is remoted started? Mine hasn't from day one but I was under the impression they were supposed to. It really doesn't bother me to much but I would like things to work like they are supossed to.

Changed out the battery.....no change. However, my heated seats DO come on automatically on remote start, and always have done so. I contacted Ford who told me to try to hit the lock button twice, not once, then the remote start button twice. Tried this a few times today, and worked every time. So far, so good. BTW, it was not me who referred to Ford's " questionable electronics ".........

I must be a bad Ford enthusiast since I called Ford's electronics questionable. Thanks for the laugh...

I have a 2012 F150 XLT with the 5.0L. I installed my remote starter (Ford # BT4Z-19G364-A) last week and had it activated by the dealer. It starts ok and so far I checked it out to 300yds but more often than not at any distance, no flashing green light. Even at short distances, like 20 feet, it is hit and miss on the green light. The one I have is a 2 way with the separate fob. I put in a new battery, still no good. The no feed back thing is bugging me. Is there something I am missing?
