I’m getting set to replace my aging exhaust on my ’77 F250. Cherry Bombs or glasspacks are whats on it now and I’m considering 50 series Flowmasters with 2 ½ inch pipe. I’m running a completely rebuilt 400M bored .030 over, RV cam plus a few other upgrades. I want a decent sound but don’t want to scare the neighbors however my main concern is performance with all the investment in the motor. Any thoughts?
Completely different set-up but I had cherry bombs on my 96 Mustang GT with the 4.6L 2V motor. Cherry bombs were corroded through and I replaced them with Flowmaster 40 series(whole cat-back set-up). Flowmasters were quieter(good thing) but I definitely missed the sound of the cherry bombs. If I could go back I would have went with the more expensive Magnaflows. I prefer the sound and Magnaflows are better quality IMO.
if you like the sound of the glasspack but are worried about the volume of the exhaust, just find the longest one you can, also the biggest outside diameter. Many of the long GP's ive heard are actually quite mellow, but still have that classic glasspack sound.
some guys like the flowmaster sound .... to each his own.
I've got both, but for me, nothing better than a short fat glasspack!
You might want to consider a 3 inch single flow master. We have used this setup on alot of trucks and it works great and not real loud. We have also used a dual in and dual out and it works very good as well.
I love my heartthrob muffler(s). they are quiet at idle, but real rumbly. when you step on the pedal you can hear it in the cab...with the windows up. (now granted i don't have carpet...) what i like MOST about them, is that they don't resonate like flowmaster super 40's do. I hate how loud they (flowmasters) are at idle. i feel it's obnoxiously so, past the point of just being mean sounding. then god forbid someone touches the pedal.
I have to jump in on this one... Slow master mufflers use baffles, reducing the flow characteristics. All noise with little to no real power benefit. I've always considered them to be a Chevy thing. All talk and no go.
Glasspacks won't last as long but they will flow better. Your best bet is to get a muffler with glass pack flow but better construction, such as Magnaflow as previously mentioned or Dynomax ultra flows.
