Probably just symantics, but if you're shopping for metal stock, don't buy "pipe." Pipe is used for plumbing, it's not particularly strong (for it's weight anyway) for structural use. "Tubing" is what roll cages, bumpers etc are made of. If you're sopping for stock, ask for tubing.
Yeah I used the wrong word, I mean to say that I used tubing.

That'd be quite unlucky if anything for that to happen. But I'd rather that happen than pile the deer into the front end and take out the lights, grille, fenders, hood, ect. The first thing I do after I hit a deer is to shut the truck off and look it over (after making sure any other occupants are ok of course).
made from 2x6 channel and some thin-wall tubing. used it extensively pushing cars around. killed one deer and not a scratch. it has since been removed from this truck and is awaiting retrofit to my "new" ride. I plan to add recovery hooks to it before installing. and instead of welding it to frame i will bolt it on to existing mounts. this should give me a little more clearance when attempting to open the hood.
Heres mine, its a little more subtle than most of these lol, Its 12" C channel, bent in on the sides w/ diamond plate welded to the top. It was originally built for an 84, but i made it work on my 89.
This is a great thread. It would be nice if FTE kept it going, maybe a sticky too? This is one of those major mods alot of us want to do and the different ideas are fun and informative.

I don't think it should be a sticky. A sticky is meant to stay easily reachable because its frequently needed or is something to do with the whole community.
Not on a Ford truck but here's a couple I made for ideas. The one on the Explorer is just simple box tube with angled reliefs. The Jeep one is crazy, took a lot of time. It uses a lever operated integrated hitch pin since the receiver was set in flush and inaccessible.
This is a headache rack I got off a brick nose being parted out. The tabs on the bottom are supports for exhaust stacks that were on the IDI I bought it off of. I was working on wiring up spotlights at this moment, hence the hanging wires.
here's mine I did last year. I still plan on adding some brake lights on the side eventually. Building your own is definitely the way to. cheaper and you get what you want. I didn't like how most racks sold stick so far up past the cab. There's a couple more pics in my album.
Truck guy99, that one is nice. Sits slightly above the cab, that's kind of the design I started off with, then I got carried away as I was drawing it on cardboard.
Nice bumper White Max. looks solid, and it probably helps as a standing platform for when working on your truck, that's next on my list. build a bumper
A rack I just had made for my one ton. Going to add a brake light and working lights to it.
Would love to get a custom front bumper, but they are pricy, even if made locally. The guy who made this for me was building a sweet bumper for an old RV when I first talked to him.
